THE idea of setting up the Brunei Amateur Basketball League (BABL) has received plenty of positive response.

The Brunei Times reported on Tuesday that the BABL is in the works and is tentatively scheduled to begin in March next year.

The league, which is the first of its kind in the Sultanate, will be similar to the Asean Basketball League (ABL), and is open to any valid identity card holders in the country.

To spice things up and to make it more competitive, each team are allowed to field two international imports (without a valid Brunei IC), bounded by a contract.

Louise Wong, who is the organiser of the league, had said that the tournament will benefit the local cagers. Read More…

Q: Tell me a little bit on how it all started. I was told that you played basketball outside of the country before.

A: My family migrated to Vancouver, Canada, when I was seven years old and I started out playing football in a little league when I first got there. My mum would later show me how to play basketball since she was the athletic one in the family.

I also enjoy playing golf as well since I worked on a golf course there for a while.

I graduated with a diploma in fitness training back in 2003 and I found myself back in Brunei just about three years ago. I made some new friends in KB (Kuala Belait) who I would play ball together with. I eventually joined tournaments in Miri as well.

Q: How can you compare playing overseas and here?

A: I think it's just that the community is bigger outside. Read More…

Brunei to have new basketball league soon

SOMETHING big and fresh is in store for Brunei basketball fans next year.

The Brunei Amateur Basketball League is in the works and is tentatively scheduled to begin in March.

Similar to the Asean Basketball League (ABL), the tournament, which is the first of its kind in the Sultanate, is open to Brunei citizens with a valid identity card and is set to run until June.

The new tourney will feature 15 games per season, with the Top Four teams making the playoffs.

To spice things up and to make it more competitive, each team are allowed to field two international imports.

Teams can change their players anytime as long as it is done before the final four games of the season.

Venues for the competition will be announced later but the matches should be played over a couple of different courts. Read More…

'New look' but same ol' Barracudas

THE "new look" Brunei Barracudas are virtually out of contention for the Asean Basketball League play-offs after their 72-65 defeat to leaders the Thailand Slammers at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas last night.

As expected the Brunei team's 'new' local players Ahmad Termizi Hj Nordeen, Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili, Afif Khalidi and Jamri Ramlee, who played briefly in the final quarter had only a minor role in the match as the imports were again made to work for the team.

The four were recruited recently when the team's former local cagers quit en masse on Dec 13.

Chris Kuete led the scoring charts with 21 points to lift the Slammers to victory.

Teammate Jason Lamar Dixon bagged a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Attaporn Lertmalaiporn chipped in with 10 points. Read More…

BROTHERHOOD is fellowship a fraternity or union united for a common purpose that comes with being members of a profession. We as coaches are also united by our career and we share information because this is what we do.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending an Asean Basketball League (ABL) game. The Singapore Slingers were in town to take on a local club side.

I was there to support the Singapore side and catch up with Slingers head coach Neo Beng Siang.

Neo and I have a great deal of history and both are considered pioneers of Singapore basketball. Our relationship goes back to the early 90s, to be exact 1991.

Neo was a gifted point guard who could play the game in its purest fashion. It didn't matter if he was small in stature, because his heart made up for his size.

Back in the 90s we had some classic head to head battles and, I could say this in all truth, I looked forward to seeing him play as well as playing against him. Read More…
