IT WAS heartbreak for the national basketball team when they lost to
Labuan 56-51 in last night's 12th Borneo City Men Basketball Invitation
Tournament 2010.
Though they were leading for most of the match at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, inconsistent defence and turnovers in the last quarter spelt their demise.
The national cagers led by as much as 11 points at the end of the first half after a dominant second quarter which saw them outscore the visitors 15-4.
But they weren't able to build on the 29-18 advantage they took into the second half and entered the final stanza with a lead which had dwindled down to five (40-35).
"Every game we lost this year we beat ourselves — not to take anything away from our opponents," said national coach Kevin Reece.
"We have to do the basic fundamentals ... shoot, pass, make sure the right people handle the ball. We didn't play to our capabilities and our defence was on and off. We need sustained defence for 40 minutes but we were slow and indecisive. We also missed a lot of free-throws, I think it was 16 out of 22, but I'm not sure.
"We had turnovers in the last couple of minutes ... I can coach them but I can't go out there (and play).
"I don't know the situation tomorrow (today) and if we are still in the
hunt for gold but we need to play better than we have the last two
games," added the American.
Trailing 40-35, Labuan started the last quarter brightly with an 8-3 run to even the scores at 43-43 two minutes in.
