Wildcats prove too fast for Ford
Monday, May 2, 2011
THE GILR Wildcats' run-and-gun style of play was clearly too much for Ford as they ran out 89-63 victors in Group C of the 4th Manjaro Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
The victory secures them a spot in the second round knocking their opponents out.
Three players hit double figures with Ronnel Sugnan pouring in a game-high of 26 points. Remgel Espinas added 15 and Ernesto Espique chipped in with 13 points in the triumph.
On the other hand, S Sangalia hit 17 points to lead Ford while Sonny Bautista contributed 13 points. Joseph Mamalias and Don Mordeno scored 12 and 11 points respectively in a losing effort.
Both teams were evenly-matched in the opening period but it was the Wildcats that got in front 18-13 heading into the second quarter.
The Wildcats were playing their usual style of transition basketball in the second quarter with Sugnan leading the way by penetrating the fragile Ford defence and laying it off to a slashing teammate for easy baskets.
Applying a half court trapping defence also worked wonders for the Wildcats limiting their opponents at the offensive end. The momentum was clearly with the Wildcats as they controlled the pace of the game. Everything was going their way and they were dominating the boards for a comfortable 43-29 cushion at halftime.
Ford came out playing aggressively after the break and the ball was always in Bautista's hands as he powered his way to the hoop. The whistle was getting blown each time Ford had possession with Wildcats picking up defensive fouls. Read More…
