LAKSAMANA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS (LCB) banked on the brilliant performance of Darren Wong to advance to the next round of the MD Cup 2009 yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
Wong did his usual work in the paint and finished with a game-high 29 points as LCB demolished Maktab Duli (MD) 'B' 71-51 for their second straight win in Group C.
The game was close in the first half with LCB taking a 30-26 lead.
LBC picked up their defence and forced MD 'B' to commit several errors in the ensuing play.
With 10 minutes left in the game, LCB continued to dominate the boards both at the offensive and defensive ends to extend their lead to 46-36.
LCB kept their momentum and with better teamwork pushed the ball up the court quickly on every possession to post a commanding 62-41 advantage going into the final five minutes.
Team captain of LCB, Hii Wen Leong, said they have been playing together from secondary school so they haven't had much training.
"We know that our opponents have the size advantage so in the second half, we decided to use our speed to win the game," said Hii.
When asked on what he thinks of entering into the next round, Hii replied, "We respect our opponents and treat them as strong teams but we will try our best and win every game."
Wong Ha Shiong scored 19 points while Hung Jiunn Nan chipped in 18 points for MD 'B' which must win today's game against International School Brunei at 3pm to join LCB in the second round.
"We just have to strengthen our defence and try our best to win," said Hung, team captain of MD 'B'.
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, MD 'A', Katok Sixth Form Centre Science College and Maktab Sains have earlier qualified to the next round.
