MD Cup: PTE Katok survive CHMS test

THE Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) survived a late scare from Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) to win their 2009 Maktab Duli (MD) Cup match 75-55 yesterday.
With a comfortable 34-14 lead at half-time against the Bandar Seri Begawan team, PTE Katok looked set to win the match at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.
But with centre Soon Kian Leong forced to the bench after picking up his fourth foul, CHMS took the chance to pounce on the lack of big men under the basket and came up with a good run of points to start the second half.
Both teams were looking to fast break at every opportunity but CHMS looked more suited for that tactic in the second period, wearing their opponents down with their pace and slowly dominating the rebounds category.
CHMS clawed back to 41-25 after five minutes and were just down 50-44 mid-way through the half.
CHMS also were able to produce several second-chance points, continuing to take advantage of their opponents' lack of height and pulling to within three points five minutes from time.
Jamri Ramlee contributed some rebounds and was one of the go-to-guys on the attack, but more players needed to step up if PTE Katok were to maintain their lead.
In the end it was Jon Lee who managed to keep PTE Katok in the game, running the plays and coming up with several key baskets in what turned out to be a 30-point performance from the ball-handler. Read More...
