CENGKIH Restaurant and Catering survived a late scare to hold on to a 72-64 victory over Dagger in Group C of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
In what was their second win in three games, Ahmad Termizi Nordeen had a game-high of 28 points to pace Cengkih, while Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili managed 17 points in three quarters.
On the other hand, Kel Hung was the topscorer for Dagger with 24 points while Loo Zhi Hung added 13 points to a losing cause.
The match looked over with the scoreboard reading 69-53 in favour of Cengkih with just over 30 seconds left in regulation. Hung was put on the line for a potential three-point play then and his opponents went fast asleep.
The 6ft 6in centre would miss the ensuing freethrow and got his offensive rebound for a putback and another foul.
It occurred for three consecutive possessions leading to him scoring eight straight points for Dagger to keep their hopes alive of a win. However, once Cengkih got the ball up court they made sure to utilise the clock to take the victory.
"It came down to the experience as a team. I believed that they could get the win after playing together for over 10 years now," said Wira Pori, the coach of Cengkih, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the win. Read More…
