foul-plagued GILR Wildcats 126-123 in overtime of the final of StreetballBrunei 2010 last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.
The win, which follows their Filipino Amateur Basketball (FAB) tournament triumph last month, saw Jeff Paraiso topscored with 24 points while Majomar Aying poured in 23 points. Mark Padilla also had a good game by racking up 17 points in the victory.
The GILR Wildcats started the match with 10 players on the roster and endedup bizarrelly with only four left standing at the end of the final
buzzer. Don Mordeno had a monster game, scoring 49 for the GILR Wildcats and Ronnel Sugnan contributed a 32-point effort; but it wasn't enough for them to defend their title.
Having trailed for much of the game including a deficit as large as 17 points in the first half, Hope picked up the slack after the interval. The Wildcats had played much of the match on the break that let them open up a 52-45 lead by halftime. However, Hope played through their big men down low as the Wildcats racked up the fouls.
Paraiso finally gave Hope their first lead of the match on a layup with 14 seconds to go in the third quarter at 77-74. At that point, the crowd was getting behind the team with chants of "Defence! Defence!" before Mordeno silenced the Hope fans with a three-pointer at the buzzer to keep the Wildcats up 80-78 heading into the final stanza. Read More...
