Brunei's 'superhero' finally finds sidekicks

I ONCE wrote that even superheroes need sidekicks (pic, right). But, of course, the national basketball team are more than just a team of superheroes and sidekicks.
For years Esmond Tan arguably the best cager in the Sultanate has been playing the 'superhero' for Brunei, minus the sidekick, of course but, at the Borneo Cup in Kota Kinabalu last week, Tan finally got all the help he needed.
It was Tan's first appearance in the Brunei shirt since national basketball coach Kevin Reece took over at the helm at the end of 2009 and it was his winningest too.
Brunei made history in Sabah on Saturday when they were crowned champions of the 13th Borneo City Men's Basketball Invitational Tournament 2011 in Kota Kinabalu.
They got their campaign off to a flying start defeating Borneo giants Miri 69-54 victory on Thursday.
The victory over Miri, who have won the Borneo Cup 10 times, was history itself having beaten their neighbours for the first time in 13 tries.
The national cagers continued their fine form by sweeping aside Labuan 76-47 in their second match on Friday. Read More…
