White Haven beat Easyway to take crown

FAVOURITES White Haven defeated Easyway 70-54 to capture the crown of the Belait District Basketball Association's Under-23 tournament at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria last night.

Josend Mangoroban had a game-high 21 points for White Haven while Yeo Chun Kiat led Easyway with 18 points.

The opening period was close but Easyway managed to edge ahead 12-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A switch in defence from 2-3 to 1-2-2 by White Haven slowed Easyway down and allowed them to grab the lead from their opponents 30-25 heading into halftime.

White Haven were relying on layups for points rather than their shooting.

In the third period, White Haven were also relying on good teamwork and passing as they extended their lead to eight points at 48-40 going into the final stanza.

Easyway seemed to have run out of steam in the final period, missing from three-point territory. They couldn't keep up with their opponents who were scoring from fastbreaks despite putting up a full-court pressure defence as White Haven ran away with the title.

"The tournament is not as exciting since it was played in a round-robin format," said Cheah Yong Sin, the coach of White Haven. Read More...
