Landbank and Hope in the semi-finals

Yee Chun Leong
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, June 29, 2009

A 15-4 run in the third quarter and good free-throw shooting in the last period helped Darul Trustee Remittance Landbank beat Babes Boutique 90-82 to move into the semi-finals of the 111th Philippine Independence Basketball Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

Babes Boutique had led for most of the match and held a lead as much as 11 points in the second quarter.

At halftime, Landbank were down 49-41, but capped off a great 15-4 run in the third quarter led by Mike Nuguid, scoring nine of the 15, to tie the scores at 55 a piece after three minutes of play.

Both teams started to work hard and scrambled for all the loose balls as every possession was valuable with the game so close. Eventhough Landbank had brought themselves back into the game, at the end of the third period, Babes Boutique still held a slim two-point lead 66-64.

The tides turned when Babes Boutique's offensive weapon, Roldan Binas, fouled out of the game with seven minutes to play. Landbank quickly took the lead 72-69. Both teams got into the penalty early in the final quarter and the battle of free throws was won by Landbank allowing them to successfully complete their comeback victory.

Landbank were led by Nuguid with 25 points and Ernesto Espique delivering 21 points.
Brothers Rhoy and Roldan Binas, meanwhile, top scored for Babes Boutique contributing 21 and 18 points respectively.

"The players followed all the set plays that we had practised," said Landbank head coach, Martin Carreon, when asked about the winning formula.

"The important thing was that we were trying to push their key scoring players into foul trouble and that was what happened. We made their players commit fouls and they eventually fouled out," Carreon added.

RONEL SUGNAN'S 34 points helped De Roy@lle Cafe book a semi-final berth after coming off a 93-81 victory over Magic in the 111th Philippine Independence Basketball Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat.

"We just needed to win the game since it was the final game for us in the group stages," said Sugnan. "We wanted to go to the semi-finals, that's the motivation for us in the fourth quarter."

The teams were tied at the end of the third quarter and Sugnan came alive in the fourth quarter to score 10 points including six straight points to extend De Roy@lle Cafe's lead to 10 with three minutes left to play.

The mountain was difficult to climb for the Magic team to make a come back when their top scorer Jeff Ojena had fouled out of the game with five minutes left to play. Read More...

UBD Partners With ' UWIC For PE And Sports Programme

ubd-logo-small Bandar Seri Begawan - Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) recently held a media conference for its new specially-tailored twinning course, BSc (Hons) in Physical Education (PE) and Sports, with one of the top UK universities to help fill the 'vacuum' in sports science related professionals.

UBD decided to partner with University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) to offer the programme, which is specially and carefully designed to prepare students in a career of teaching physical education and sports.

UBD said the programme is not only demanded in schools but possess a significant or an intrinsic value for the society, not only in promoting healthy lifestyle but also in terms of generating professionals in other related careers in leisure industry, sports science, community sports development, recreation management and coaching.

Ten students have been selected for the programme's first intake that was screened among many applicants and short-listed after undergoing some physical tests.

It is not easy to enter UWIC. It normally takes just about 300 applicants a year from an average of over 3,500 eligible applicants.

With the programme, the students will spend their first year in UBD, whilst the second and third year in Cardiff, and will return to UBD for the final graduation year.

According to UBD, the programmes on offer have always have some alignment with the national vision, and with the vacuum needed to be filled, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE), UBD have decided to start the new twinning programme.

Although the students will eventually spend their final year in teaching practice, during their years in Cardiff, the students will also be given practical training at one of the 400 schools and colleges in Wales.

Jacqui Hare, visiting UWIC Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), during the press conference said UWIC is very excited with the first joint-programme between UBD and UWIC.

"We know this project will greatly benefit the students themselves and a great value to the university. The design of the course has been very carefully planned. Obviously, we have to work very closely with UBD to make sure the programmes that they received make the best of that partnership and that integration will offer," she said.

She added that UWIC will benefit in many significant ways, from the exchange of ideas and cultures that the relationship will bring.

"It will certainly enhance our global reputation and it will significantly enhance the quality of the learning experience in UWIC and contribute significantly to the strategy of our internationalisation", she added.

She hoped the partnership would bring similar benefits to UBD.

According to Jacqui Hare, UWIC has within it, high profile sports players. It already has a good reputation in many sports including Rugby, Basketball, Gymnastic and Cricket, as well as in women's sports such as Netball and many others.

Queenielin/SoftLab notch second straight win

Yee Chun Leong
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

QUEENIELIN/SOFTLAB stamped their class over Darul Trustee Remittance/LandBank 101-89 yesterday to notch their second win in the 111th Philippine Independence Basketball Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association Court, Batu Bersurat.

Geve Leones came with another brilliant game to lead his team with 28 points despite sitting out the third quarter.

"I felt that I played good today and hopefully we can win the rest of our games to top the group," said Leones, who scored 29 points when they won over Ren Yis/Primatel 106-80 last Saturday.

LandBank looked as if they were going to stage a rally in the third period with Leones on the bench.

But Aries Castro, who finished with 15 points, went on a shooting spree to give Queenielin/SoftLab a 79-64 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

While both teams played well in the first half, Queenielin/SoftLab were able to take control and returned to their dugout with a 48-40 lead.

LandBank managed to keep themselves in the game with their offensive rebounding turning to second chance points.

Queenielin/SoftLab applied full-court pressure from throughout the game, forcing their opponents to several turnovers.

Queenielin/SoftLab coach Lhito Porlahe said that he was conditioning the players to applying full-court pressure on both games.

"We wanted to pressure their point guard and to give him a hard time bringing the ball. The team performed well today as they listened to instructions and executed them well," said Porlahe.

When asked about the chances of topping the group, Porlahe answered, "The other teams are very strong but hopefully we would be able to top our group and advance into the knock out stages."

LandBank were led by Ernisto Espique with 20 points and Sherwin Antonio contributing 14 points.

In the other game, Babes Boutique clobbered Ren Yis/Primatel 97-77.

Meanwhile, defending champion Chop Eng Seng Keo/Pinoy Resources decided to pull out from the tournament for technical reasons.

Brunei to join Borneo City Cup

by Yee Chun Leong

THE National Basketball team will be competing in the Borneo City Cup 2009 to be held in Miri from June 26 - 28.

The annual tournament will have hosts Miri, Kota Kinabalu and Labuan alongside Brunei fighting for top honours.

Brunei finished third last year in the men's category while Kota Kinabalu emerged champions. The tournament will be played in the round-robin format.

The players for both the men's and women's National teams were chosen by the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) based on their performances in the Inter-City Basketball tournament held in April this year.

The National team has training three times a week at the BBA court at Batu Bersurat.

Tony Tan, the men's team's head coach, said that the team is a lot better compared to last year.

"We have gained more experience as we have played more matches. But too bad we can't have Ben Sim on the team due to injury. The team would be much stronger if we had him alongside Esmond Tan as he is a very good rebounder.

"I think we can improve from our third position from last year. But we don't know yet until the tournament starts," said Tony.

The team will be competing in the Seria Sultan Cup starting this June 14 as warm up games prior to the tournament in Miri.

Tony said, "There will be some strong Filipino teams with some imports playing in the tournament in Seria. So this is going to be good training for us before we head off to Miri the week after."

In last year's edition, the women's National team managed third place. Labuan didn't join last year's edition and are still uncertain if they are joining this year.

Just like the men's team, the women's team also have training three times a week to prepare for the tournament.

"There are a lot of changes to the line-up compared to last year's team as many players have other commitments and can't participate," said Maxim Yap, head coach for the women's National Basketball team.

"But we managed to get additional players coming from the Belait District."

The teams will be heading off to Miri on June 25.

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Day of Prayer for the Nation tomorrow night, Friday, at the Philippine Embassy Chancery, will kick off the 111th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, the embassy announced yesterday.

Prayers will be offered for the Philippines, the Filipino people, and host country Brunei Darussalam and its people.

It will also be a gathering to bid farewell to Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Virginia H Benavidez, dean of the Brunei diplomatic corps, the first Philippine woman career ambassador, and the longest serving diplomat in the Sultanate, in a 13-year career, with a gap of three years. She came to Brunei as first secretary to the Philippine Embassy in August 1992 and left Brunei as Minister-Counsellor and Consul-General after six years, eight months and 26 days.

"Having served seven years, two months and six days as the first woman career ambassador, I have done my best to fleet the trust, confidence and expectations, to strengthen Philippine-Brunei ties, and serve the 22,000-strong Filipino community. Doing our job, excelling and learning from it, is all part of leaving," she said at the last gathering of the Philippine Embassy family last Sunday.

On June 7, a special thanksgiving mass in Filipino will be held at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in the capital.

On Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Independence Day Basketball Cup will be held at the Brunei Basketball Association court at Batu Bersurat.

SEABA 2009: SouthEast Asia Basketball Championships

seaba

The 8th annual SEABA championships will be played this coming weekend (June 6-10, 200) in Medan, Indonesia.

SEABA, the SouthEast Asian Basketball Association,  is a sub-region of FIBA Asia that includes these ten Southeast Asian countries; Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

These ten national teams will compete for the gold medal.

The tournament winner will automatically earn a berth into the 2009 FIBA Asia Championships being held in August 2009.

The Republic of the Philippines has dominated this tournament in its seven-year history, winning five of the possible seven gold medals including the last SEABA championship held in 2007.

It is very likely that the Philippines would be seeking their seventh consecutive title this year had it not been for a FIBA-mandated suspension in 2005.

Kelly Williams

The Philippines have brought home the first place trophy in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2007, while the Malaysian National Team has won the gold the remaining two tournaments (1994, 2005).

SEABA is just one of five subzones in FIBA Asia Region - the other zones include East Asia, Gulf, Middle Asia, and West Asia.  SEABA has inspired the ASEAN basketball league, a proposed league solely made up of Southeast Asian teams set to commence late-2009.

2009 NBA Finals – L.A. Lakers v.s. Orlando Magic

2009 NBA Finals

Magic center Dwight Howard challenges the shot of Lakers guard Kobe Bryant. NBA Finals starts tomorrow (local time). So there's no Kobe-Lebron in the finals but Nike will continue to run commercials of the Kobe Bryant and LeBron James puppets despite the fact that James, unlike Bryant, isn't playing in the Finals after his team was eliminated by the Magic.

more Nike MVPs commercial here.

Interesting facts:
#Kobe says he can play at a high level for at least another six years, but he might never get an opportunity like this again. Now he has the best supporting cast than Lebron.
#The Dwight Howard-Andrew Bynum matchup features Superman versus a player trying to discover his identity. Bynum's defense on Dwight Howard is one of the keys to victory for the Lakers.
#Magic's Michael Pietrus to ditch Kobe-endorsed shoes for Finals. He has been wearing Nike Hyperdunk sneakers endorsed by Kobe the whole season. In the finals, he will gear up with Jordans.
#Jameer Nelson is coming out from a shoulder injury. We'll see more high pick & rolls this time again.
#Magic has the best outside shooters in the league in Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu and JJ Riddick. Spreading the floor, giving more room for Howard inside but the Lakers has the versatility of Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza (a castoff from the Magic) guarding the perimeter shooters.
#Magic's coach Stan Van Gundy doesn't believe in coach match-ups. He's never been in the Finals before as a head coach or an assistant compared to Phil's 10 rings, 9 as a coach and 1 as player.
