BEFORE last night's match there were two, but now there is only one.

Easyway who have the national cagers on their roster are now the only unbeaten team in the Sultan's Cup after blowing away Wisdom Jade Daycare Wildcats 85-63 in Group A of the tournament's second round at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.

In what was their sixth consecutive victory before heading into the semi-finals, three players hit double figures for the "national side", who were without Esmond Tan due to a back strain.

Captain Ben Sim had a productive game with a game-high of 28 points including six rebounds. Big man Muhd Zainul Ashyraf Hj Hussin had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Soon Kian Leong added his own with 10 points and 10 boards to his name in the triumph.

The strong defence by Easyway limited the offence of the big-three for the Wildcats. Danny Felicilda had the team-high of 13 points while Geve Leones and Ronnel Sugnan added 12 and 10 points respectively in a losing effort. Read More...

THE Sultan's Cup started out with 15 teams but only the elite survived.

Just six teams separated into two groups remain for the second round of the annual tournament, scheduled to tip off today at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Group A is made up of the defending champions, the national team playing under the banner of Easyway, together with SYSB and Wisdom Jade Daycare Wildcats.

Welflex Engineering, SGTB Dragons and MK Primo Jaya are in Group B.

Five of the six are Filipino teams, once again showing their superiority in the sport in the Sultanate.

Two matches will be contested today and the first pits Welflex against the Dragons. The second game will see Easyway go up against SYSB.

All eyes will be on the second game as Easyway, who have won four straight with an average of 39.5 points, are favourites to make it all the way this year.

They are a much stronger lineup especially with the addition of Esmond Tan and Lim Aik Hock as opposed to last year.

However, Tan hasn't been up to his full potential, having missed several matches during the group stages due to work commitments. Read More...

Easyway win with impressive display of defence

EASYWAY sent out a message to their contenders with a showcase of watertight defence.

The national basketball team demolished SYSB 88-49 in Group A of the second round of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Five players hit double figures for Easyway with Yap Chun Ping leading the way with 17 points including five three-pointers. Point guard Choo Yung Jian flirted with a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while captain Ben Sim added 14 points. Muhd Zainul Ashyraf Hj Hussin had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards while Kevin Tay chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.

Elmer Alburo scored in double figures for SYSB with 11 points to a losing cause. More importantly, Easyway kept SYSB main players Elvin Requintin and Apollo Bibat to only four and three points respectively.

Easyway came out playing man-to-man lockdown defence. They were not giving their opponents any open looks and were playing good help defence. Muhd Zainul Ashyraf was blocking shots and it was only a minute left in the opening period that Alburo connected on a jumpshot that saw SYSB trailing 13-2 going into the second quarter.

The match was a physical one with the referees letting go of some calls. It was still within reach for SYSB as their opponents were not making easy baskets. The lead was cut down to six points but Easyway had five straight points, all coming from the freethrow line, to end the period for a 34-23 advantage at halftime.

National basketball coach, Kevin Reece, had every reason to be all smiles after the lopsided win. "We played good defence and we didn't allow them to score. I'm very pleased with our defence and we hope to continue to get better. We don't care who on our team scores but everyone stepped up especially our bench," said Reece in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph. Read More...

Cengkih disedge Dagger young boys

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Muhd Masduqi Hj Hussin (C) of Cengkih goes for a shot in between two Dagger defenders. Picture: BT/Yee Chun Leong CENGKIH Restaurant and Catering survived a late scare to hold on to a 72-64 victory over Dagger in Group C of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

In what was their second win in three games, Ahmad Termizi Nordeen had a game-high of 28 points to pace Cengkih, while Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili managed 17 points in three quarters.

On the other hand, Kel Hung was the topscorer for Dagger with 24 points while Loo Zhi Hung added 13 points to a losing cause.

The match looked over with the scoreboard reading 69-53 in favour of Cengkih with just over 30 seconds left in regulation. Hung was put on the line for a potential three-point play then and his opponents went fast asleep.

The 6ft 6in centre would miss the ensuing freethrow and got his offensive rebound for a putback and another foul.

It occurred for three consecutive possessions leading to him scoring eight straight points for Dagger to keep their hopes alive of a win. However, once Cengkih got the ball up court they made sure to utilise the clock to take the victory.

"It came down to the experience as a team. I believed that they could get the win after playing together for over 10 years now," said Wira Pori, the coach of Cengkih, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the win. Read More…

Coach wants Easyway to maintain their momentum

Monday, July 16, 2012

image LIVING up to their name after sweeping aside their group stage opponents, Easyway can now shift their attention to the main task at hand defending their Sultan Cup title.

The national basketball team surprised none by recording comfortable wins in each of their Group A games and Saturday night's 86-50 result against MK Primo Jaya left them with a perfect 4-0 record.

They started off with a 77-44 win over Chainblock LSL last Monday, blew past J-Nat Enterprise 96-50 on Wednesday and ran out 101-58 winners against Asmin Enterprise the next night beating their opponents by an average of 39.5 points at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Kevin Reece (pic) doesn't want his charges to get overconfident though, and speaking to The Brunei Times yesterday, the national coach called on his players to maintain their momentum.

"The group stage means nothing to us the next three games will decide our season," said Reece, who saw his men surrender their Borneo Cup crown to Kota Kinabalu at the start of the month.

"The quarter-finals are in a couple of weeks' time so right now we have to keep practising and stay in our routine.

"We've found our niche now ... The little things we took for granted last time, we're doing them properly.

"Little things like talking to each other on defence, pointing at the ball, trusting teammates, being aggressive.

"We're not going to wait for our opponents, we're going to take the game to them," he added.

The American has always taught his players the importance of defence, and once again, their ability to shut their opponents down is earning them all the right headlines. Read More…

Superio plots Dragons' thrilling win

Saturday, July 14, 2012

VINCENT Superio played the role of the hero last night.

image The guard made the game-winning freethrow to lift the SGTB Dragons to a 69-68 victory over Cengkih Restaurant and Catering in Group C of the Sultan's Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Cengkih faced a deficit as large as 15 points in the third quarter and played much of the match at the backfoot. They had a golden opportunity to steal the win with ball possession and the scores tied at 68-68 with 37 seconds to go in regulation.

Coming off a timeout, the inbounds pass got to Ahmad Termizi Nordeen but good ball pressure saw Superio strip the ball. Racing down the floor he almost made it a three-point play just to see his shot rim off.

He missed the first from the charity stripe but made no mistake with the second attempt to put his team in front.

However, there was plenty of time left for Cengkih to seal the deal with 30s left on clock. They managed to get three attempts at the basket but to no avail.

When the Dragons finally got possession, Cengkih were desperately trying to foul to stop the clock but were not in the penalty yet. When they finally were, they sent Denver Esteban to the line with one second left. Read More…

Ho proves to be Boon for 3-on-3

Friday, July 13, 2012

Flex-Link Enterprise's Justin Yong (C) going for a lay-up while being guarded by 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge's Han Ming Kwong (L) during last night's Sultan's Cup action. Picture: BT/Jason Thomas TWO HUGE three-pointers from Ho Boon Siong lifted 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge to a 83-76 win over Flex-Link Enterprise in last night's Sultan Cup action. With the game tied 72-72 in the final 90 seconds, Boon Siong hit a trey to make it 75-72.

A Flex-Link turonver on the next play saw Lim Liang Wei build the lead to 77-72 but Shim Jan Ting set the scores at 77-74 straight after.

Though a lay-up from Rosli Ahad helped Flex-Link pull back to 77-76 in the last 45 seconds, Boon Siong's second trey in less than a minute put the national Under-23 team up 80-76 with 20 seconds to go in what was turning out to be a highly entertaining Group B match-up.

Rosli was forced to foul Han Ming Kwong on the next possession and the latter hit both his free-throws to make it a two-possession game at 82-76.

Flex-Link's Justin Yong missed lay-up meant the game was all over, and though Ming Kwong only made one of his two free-throws after Cheah Yong Sin fouled him with two seconds on the clock, the game was done and dusted. Read More…

Paraiso designs Welflex win

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Jeff Paraiso (R) of Welflex Engineering prepares to go for a layup against Elvin Requintin of SYSB in their Group B match of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/Yee Chun Leong JEFF Paraiso put up a 37-point performance to lift Welflex Engineering to a 92-84 victory over SYSB in Group B of the Sultan's Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.

With the match down to the wire, Paraiso scored his team's last eight points to seal the win.

"I didn't know how well I can do to score tonight (Wednesday). Was thinking to use the glass more because my right thumb is injured but I think I was just lucky," said Paraiso in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph.

"I thought we played well as a team but the only problem was that our defence was slow. It was good that we managed to limit (Elvin) Requintin in the second half because he was unstoppable early on," added the forward.

Welflex also had input from the duo of Don Mordeno and Marjomar Aying with 13 and 11 points respectively in the triumph. Read More…

Wildcats' hot shots down Dragons

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Mike Nuguid (L) of the Wildcats and Ryan Esteban of the Dragons fight for a loose ball in their Group C match of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/Yee Chun Leong THE Wisdom Jade Daycare Wildcats ripped the SGTB Dragons 87-74 in Group C of the Sultan's Cup last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Contenders to the crown this year, three players hit double figures in the triumph despite the absence of Geve Leones in the lineup. Danny Felicilda had the hot hands for the Wildcats with a game-high 30 points. Jerold Pascua added 21 and captain Ronnel Rugnan poured in 18 in the victory.

The Dragons were led by Vincent Superio with 23 points. The duo of Aries Castro and Noel Grafil provided some firepower with 12 and 11 points respectively in a losing effort.

The Wildcats started the game hot and were killing their opponents on the break. They were also playing good defence to limit their opponents to only two field goals for an 18-6 lead in the opening period.

Key players Superio and Castro were inserted into the match for the Dragons then as they arrived late and they managed to pick up the pieces but were down 26-18 going into the second stanza.

The Wildcats despite playing with good chemistry saw their lead trimmed to 27-24 after three minutes into the second. However, three consecutive treys with two by Felicilda saw them back up 36-24 with four minutes to go to the break. Read More…
