Cagers out to repeat Borneo Cup win

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

The Acting Director of the Department of Youth and Sports, Hj Rosmadee Hj Md Daud (front row 4th L), Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) president Goh Kim Thiam (front row 3rd L) and national basketball coach Kevin Reece (front row 5th R) posing for a photo with the national team yesterday. Hj Rosmadee and other officials from the department paid a visit to the national team who will be going to Labuan to defend their Borneo City Men's Basketball Invitational Tournament 2012 crown this weekend. Picture: BT/ Jason Thomas THE DEPARTMENT of Youth and Sports will be paying close attention to the national basketball team's campaign at the 14th Borneo City Men's Basketball Invitational Tournament 2012 in Labuan this weekend.

The defending champions are out to retain their crown at the June 29-July 1 event knowing that another good performance will put the team in consideration for bigger events, and prove that last year's title was no fluke.

The department's Acting Director Hj Rosmadee Hj Md Daud paid a visit to the national team during their training session at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat yesterday, where he was attended to by BBA president Goh Kim Thiam and other members of the association.

Speaking to The Brunei Times after the visit, Hj Rosmadee said that events such as the Borneo Cup act as a gauge to see where Brunei stands though the real challenge is converting those results at the regional level.

"This is a good platform (to build for bigger events)," he said.

"We have to see where our level is at ... The trip is partly funded by the department (and) if the team does well, its easier for us to give them support to go for bigger events," he added.

Though Brunei's last participation at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games came in 1999, when the Sultanate hosted the multi-sport event, national coach Kevin Reece believed his players have what it takes to compete at the regional level.

The American insisted Brunei deserve to go head to head against the best in the region and was adamant his men will be be able to provide a fight.

"I know we can beat Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapore," said Reece.

"Malaysia and Thailand are in a different league, and Indonesia and Philippines ... They're a whole other level," he noted. Read More…

"This year will be a test of character. It will be the same where no one thinks that we can do it. People think that is it some fluke last year but we are geared up for this once again," he added.

Lian Fu blunt Dagger

Monday, June 18, 2012

Players from Lian Fu Restaurant and Dagger in action during the 2nd Easyway Under-19 Basketball Tournament played last night. Picture: BT/Jason Thomas LIAN Fu Restaurant's determined defence earned them the 2nd Easyway Under-19 Basketball Tournament crown last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, beating Dagger 76-64 after recovering from a poor start.

The battle under the boards was always going to decide the final, and tightening the screws inside the paint, Lian Fu went on a 17-2 run to close out the game and the title.

Crucial to the result was Wong Yew Cheng, whose three blocks in the first five minutes of the last period created vital transition points for Lian Fu.

"We knew we had to play all out," said Lian Fu captain Jong How Kiat, who led all scorers with 23 points.

"There was no point resting anymore this was the final.

"They got back into the game because of our (bad) inside defence ... They kept penetrating and their passes had our defense mixed up," explained Jong about their lack of focus in the third quarter. Read More…

Lian Fu will now relish the chance to go up against Dagger in tonight's final at 8:30pm after Dagger beat Sin Yin Huat Autopart and Services 84-78 in last night's other semi-final.

Lian Fu's Andric Koh led all scorers with 18 points while Jong How Kiat added 15 and Melvin Loh contributed 12.

With key player Si Kae Sen out injured, Lim Chong Nam had to pick up the slack for SKJ he scored 13 while Law Vi Chen and Melvin See each had 10.

But playing against a Lian Fu side firing on all cylinders, SKJ whose lazy and lethargic defense failed to win any admirers always had their backs to the wall. Read More…

"DEFENCE wins championships" and that held true for the SKS Stingers.

The Stingers made it a double after edging Istana Maintenance Department (IMD) 79-71 in the final of the Inter-Company NBT Basketball Tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.

Stingers head coach Rhaul Palma Jr deployed a man-to-man defence strategy for the whole game and it delivered them the title for the second straight year.

"Our game plan was to play man-to-man and to pressure their key players. It made it hard for them to receive the ball and it paid off. Defence won us the game," said Palma during an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"There is no Man of the Match, but instead the whole team contributed to the win," he added.

Three players hit double figures for the champions with Rhajnee Sinco putting up a strong showing with game-high 29 points to pace the Stingers. Read More…

Stingers home in on double

Saturday, June 2, 2012

-Defending champions take on IMD in final today

National cager Ben Sim (L) will be pivotal in helping the SKS Stingers win their 2nd consecutive Inter-Company NBT Basketball Tournament trophy when they take on Istana Maintenance Department (IMD) in the final tonight at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.Picture: BT/ Jason Thomas THE SKS Stingers are only one win away from a double in the Inter-Company NBT Basketball Tournament.

They are riding a 17-game unbeaten streak in the two-year history of the competition.

Only Istana Maintenance Department (IMD) stand in their way as they face off in the final today at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

The Stingers were made to work after beating DST Communications 81-65 in the semi-finals on Thursday.

IMD, meanwhile, defeated Hyatt 81-62 in the other semi-final match to set up the encounter.

However, all is stacked in favour of the defending champions after they blasted their way to a 92-63 demolition of IMD in the group stage.

It is said that all streaks must come an end. Will IMD be able to pull out all the stops and cause an upset?

Stingers head coach Rhaul Palma Jr thinks otherwise and believes that they should be the last team standing after the game.

"We're prepared for them and we have our game plan ready," said Palma Jr in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday. Read More…

It's Stingers vs IMD in the final BASKETBALL

Friday, June 1, 2012

SKS Stinger's Lowey Jee Palma (C) driving for a layup against DST Communications defenders in their Inter-Company NBT Basketball Tournament semi-final match last night.Picture: BT/ Jason Thomas THE SKS Stingers survived a late scare to progress to the Inter-Company NBT Basketball Tournament final after beating DST Communications 81-65 last night.

The only unbeaten team in the competition's two-year history, the defending champions pulled away in the second quarter and took a 50-26 lead heading into the second half at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

But a lack of urgency on both ends of the court meant they were almost punished late in the third quarter when DST pulled out all the stops to claw back to 11 points.

Though they ran out of steam mid-way through the final period, DST deserve credit for their gutsy effort and succeeded in providing the crowd an entertaining end to the semi-final clash.

SKS will meet Istana Maintenance Department (IMD in tomorrow's final at 7:30pm, IMD beating Hyatt 81-62 in last night's other semi-final.

Justin Yong was a big reason DST were able to edge back into last night's game, the lanky centre leading all scorers with 29 points 17 of them in the second half.

Both sides were head-to-head in the opening exchanges until DST went on a cold spell half-way through the quarter, which ended with an Alwin Lavarias baseline jumper which gave SKS a 10-point lead at 22-12. Read More…
