National coach pleased with talent pool

THE national basketball team have probably found the missing pieces to the puzzle.

National Basketball Coach Kevin Reece The curtains came down on the Aewon Cup 2011 on Saturday night after Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music defeated Chevrolet Cruze 80-73 in the final at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music, who are made up mostly of national cagers, went eight for eight in the tournament and eventually won each game by an average margin of almost 30 points in the round-robin stage.

Being such a dominant force in the competition, it was a different affair in the final having to face a 37-40 deficit at halftime but managed to turn things around within a minute in the third quarter with a 10-0 run that settled the tie.

However, the main aim of the tournament was to select players for the upcoming Borneo City Cup to be held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in August.

National basketball coach Kevin Reece was on hand to watch most of the games at the two-week tournament and he felt that there is plenty of talent. Read More…

Surprising slow start to the FAB- LBC tournament

Monday, May 30, 2011

ON PAPER the match should have been an instant blowout.
image
But then a lacklustre performance by Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) only resulted in a hard fought 55-42 victory over Hua San Hardware in the opener of the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Filled with an all-star cast on the roster, CESK saw Allan Talanay topscored for the team with 12 points and Geve Leones adding 10 in the win.

Apollo Bibat, Virginio Maparac and Ceracio all scored 10 points each for Hua San Hardware in the loss.

Both teams got off to slow starts with the ball refusing to go through the hoop. It took more than three minutes before the first field goal of the game was scored, courtesy of a three-point play by Leones.

CESK had the size advantage but despite them pounding the ball into the paint, they were having difficulties finishing to only take a 12-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

It remained the same affair in the second quarter with Hua San Hardware throwing up bricks as they fell further behind 28-17 at halftime.

It was surprising that spectators remained for the second half as it seemed more like an exhibition game instead of a competitive one with Hua San Hardware never in a threatening position with their lack of offensive power.A total of seven teams will play in a round-robin format with the top four teams advancing into the semi-finals.

Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong TOURNAMENT favourites SKS (Syarikat Kejuruteraan Sistematik S/B) survived a hard fought battle to grab an 85-80 victory over IMD (Istana Maintenance Dept) in Group A of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Four players hit double figures for SKS with Rio Oblido leading the way hitting a game-high of 27 points, with 11 coming from the freethrow line, and Cesar Asaldo pouring in 21. Rollin Castillo and Lowey Jee Palma each chipped in 13 and 11 points respectively in the win.
image
Aries Castro topscored for IMD with 22 points and Elvin Requintin added 21 points in the losing effort.

IMD started the game as the better team with SKS failing to make their shots from range.

SKS, however, kept themselves in the game by being aggressive inside the paint at the offensive end, drawing fouls to earn their points from the charity stripe.

With Requintin manning the paint and putting up a block party, IMD would lead by as much as six points but SKS switched to man-to-man defence to claw within 19-20 heading into the second quarter.
imageThe shooting woes continued for SKS while in contrast IMD were getting good looks at the basket. Read More…

Aewon Cup hots up with semis tonight

Friday, May 27, 2011

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music's Po Yung Hui (L) running the break, being guarded by a Lian Fu Restaurant defender during the group stages of the Aewon Cup 2011. Both teams will play a rematch in the semi-finals at 7 tonight. Picture: BT file IF THERE were any expectations for the Aewon Cup 2011 then it has got to be Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music winning the tournament with a flawless record.

Made up of a squad consisting mostly of national cagers, Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music have blitzed through the field going six for six in the round-robin stage.

The semi-finals begin today and Lian Fu Restaurant stand in their way with their match scheduled at 7pm.

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music are coming off a shooting clinic demolishing Chevrolet Cruze 92-61 in what is a possible final preview on Wednesday night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

With nothing at stake for both teams having secured a spot in the final four, neither played with a complete lineup.

But good defensive work and their barrage of treys an amazing 16 from down town ensured the rout in the encounter.

With plenty of depth on the roster, they should also have no problems sweeping aside Lian Fu having triumphed over the same opponents 86-54 in their first meeting last Wednesday.

"We'll just enjoy a rematch with Lian Fu. We wish to see the development in our Sunday youth team. We hope they show us good things," said Maxim Yap, the head coach of Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music. Read More….

Clutch touch by Marmela powers Brunei-Muara to gold

Friday, May 27, 2011

Christina Chen (L) of Kuala Belait being defended by Brunei-Muara defenders in their Aewon Cup 2011 match last night.Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong AN MVP-like performance by Marmela Izzah powered Brunei-Muara to the women's crown of the Aewon Cup 2011 following a 64-58 win over Kuala Belait last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Marmela exploded for 16 straight points inclusive of two treys in the fourth period enroute to a game-high 22 points that lifted Brunei-Muara to victory.

"I just wished that every shot would go in each time I threw it up and thankfully it did," said Marmela on her performance during an interview after the triumph.

Marmela Izzah "Our opponents were good at going inside on offence and spotting the open shooter but we moved a lot faster and managed to pick up on defence as well as improve on offence that got us the win," added the 15-year-old.

"I would also have to thank my teammates as this tournament is the first time I joined the team. We all put in a great effort and it was a good opportunity playing alongside them," continued Marmela.

Besides Marmela, Lim Giuk Ting provided a boost on the offensive end with 14 points in the win.

Three players got into double figures for KB with Amanda Tia leading the way with 16 points.

Christina Chen added 12 points and Wong Kung Hui chipped in 10 to the losing cause.
2011 Aewon Cup Women's ChampionIn what was a high-octane match right from the opening period, KB were utilising their size advantage to penetrate into the paint to score.

Brunei-Muara were playing good transition basketball but it was KB that stuck their nose in front 16-15 heading into the second period.

KB were running their offence smoothly and finding the open shooter to eventually extend their lead to 26-20 midway through the stanza.

Brunei-Muara were doing a good job on the boards but couldn't get their shots to fall as they faced a 29-33 deficit at halftime.

Both sides were playing with spurts with neither finding the ability to pull away from the other. Read More…

Long range bombs flatten Cruze

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music hit 16 treys

Jake Goh (C) of Chevrolet Cruze goes for a contested shot against Benjamin Lim (L) of Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music in their Aewon Cup 2011 match last night.Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong A MATCH between two unbeaten teams in the tournament didn't live up to expectations.

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music connected on 16 three-pointers to demolish Chevrolet Cruze 92-61 in the last group game of the Aewon Cup 2011 last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Choo Yung Jian had the hot hands for Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music hitting eight treys enroute to a game-high of 28 points and Benjamin Lim, who missed his first eight shots, found his stroke to make four from beyond the arc to contribute 26 points in the victory.

Teo Hong Kiong was the only cager that hit double figures for Cruze with 10 points.

An encounter that didn't have anything much at stake saw both teams without their key players Ben Sim and Esmond Tan on the squad for Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music and Cruze respectively.
image
With their speed advantage, Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music played good transition basketball right from tip off and their man-to-man defence were giving Cruze plenty of trouble.

Choo got hot early scoring 13 of this team's first quarter points to give them a 15-13 lead heading into the second stanza.

Consisting a squad of national cagers, Le Doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music started the second quarter with a 9-0 run, all coming from three-point territory.

Cruze were held scoreless for the first three minutes before Lim Fung found one from range.

image Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music were not allowing their opponents any open looks and were putting on a shooting clinic. Everything that they launched seemed to go through the net. Even if they didn't, they were outhustling Cruze for offensive rebounds that saw them extend their lead to 43-23 at halftime.

It remained the same affair after the break and Cruze were in no position to mount a comeback, leading to their first defeat in the tournament. Read More…

'King' Kong on the rampage, yet again

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

CAVAN Kong stole the show once again at the Aewon Cup 2011.

The Le doux Patisserie/ Sia N Tang Music shooting-guard hit a game-high 35 points in the team's 97-67 win over LeApple Bakery last night, with 21 of them coming from beyond the arc at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Kong's shooting clinic rekindled memories of the team's 101-70 win over Yun Lee Motor Workshop last Tuesday where he scored eight treys en route to a game-high 30 points.

Lim Eng Ann top-scored for LeApple with 18 points all coming from beyond the arc the same stat he racked up during last Monday's 72-47 loss to Brunei United Ballers (BUB).

Comprised of players from national basketball coach Kevin Reece's training scheme, Le doux Patisserie/ Sia N Tang Music were always firm favourites to win the tie against the veteran national basketball side and they did so on the back of a destructive 36-10 third quarter.

It was Le doux Patisserie/ Sia N Tang Music's sixth win in as many matches, and though they can afford to rest their starters in tonight's final group stage match against Chevrolet Cruz who beat Yun Lee 96-79 in last night's second game Maxim Yap insists they won't. Read More…

Aewon Cup: Wardah leads Brunei-Muara comeback

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Marnelah Izzah (C) of Brunei-Muara goes for a layup in between the Tutong defence in their Aewon Cup 2011 match at Batu Bersurat last night. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong A STRONG second half performance powered Brunei-Muara to a 62-42 victory over Tutong in the women's category of the Aewon Cup 2011 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.

Wardah Hj Mekrat had the hot hands for Brunei-Muara, pouring in a game-high of 17 points including nailing five from beyond the arc.

Marnelah Izzah was also influential in the win contributing 15 points for Brunei-Muara.

On the other hand, Huang Shao Yin led Tutong with 12 points and Wong Yii Shin added 11 points in a losing effort.

Brunei-Muara got off to a slow start struggling to find their rhythm at the offensive end. Tutong took advantage of their rivals' weakness and with Huang the go-to-person for the team they opened up a 10-5 lead heading into the second quarter.

Things remained the same in the second quarter with Brunei-Muara relying on their outside shooting until Wardah caught fire nailing three from beyond the arc in the stanza. One of the baskets came just under two minutes to go before halftime and that gave Brunei-Muara the lead for the first time, at 19-18.

Brunei-Muara worked hard at the defensive end with full court pressure defence and this made life difficult for Tutong, but it was all tied up at 20-20 at the break.

Stepping up on the defence, Brunei-Muara got off to a blazing start in the third quarter for a 7-0 run in the opening three minutes.

Tutong were held to only one field goal and Brunei-Muara were ahead 32-23 midway through the period. Read More…

LeApple break 5-game losing streak

Monday, May 23, 2011

Tony Tan (2nd R) of LeApple Bakery shoots the ball during their Aewon Cup 2011 game against Yun Lee Motor Workshop last night. Tan provided the game-winning assist to Soon Chin Long to help the team pick up their first win of the campaign, a 62-60 result at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/Jason Thomas SOON Chin Long was LeApple Bakery's hero last night, scoring the game-winning shot to earn his team a 62-60 win against Yun Lee Motor Workshop in the Aewon Cup 2011.

It was their first victory in five matches and it was largely thanks to Soon, who scored nine of his 13 points in the last quarter.

Lim Eng Ann added 15 points while Albert Chu contributed 11.

Tony Tan also played a pivotal role in the result after all, it was his defense-splitting pass to Soon with less than four seconds left that saw the latter score with an easy lay-up under the basket.

Soon also scored the last minute buzzer-beater which made it 51-51 to force overtime against Autoexperts the night before, though LeApple would eventually succumb 56-54.
 Wu Chun
There was no such heart-break last night though. Both LeApple and Yun Lee entered the game looking for their first win of the tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, and it was a close game throughout.
LeApple enjoyed a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, extending it to 38-27 heading into the second half. But a strong third quarter performance by Yun Lee, where they outscored LeApple 20-9, meant the scoreboard was tied at 47-47 at the start of the final stanza.

Ak Muhd Faizuladzmi Pg Tajudin missed two free-throws but Yun Lee was still up 58-57 in the last two minutes, after which Paul Wong Chuan's shot after an airball by Koh Wie Chian made the lead 60-57. Read More…

United we stand, Ballers win

Sunday, May 22, 2011

Brunei United Ballers Lim Liang Wei (L) trying to set up a play against Yun Lee Motor Workshop defenders during their Aewon Cup 2011 match yesterday.Picture: BT/ Jason Thomas BRUNEI United Ballers (BUB) picked up their second win of the Aewon Cup 2011 with a 63-50 result over Yun Lee Motor Workshop last night.

Opening up a double-digit lead early in the first quarter, BUB managed to hold on to the advantage and ride out for the victory at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

BUB's Badri Suhaili led all scorers with 16 points while Clinton Nambiar and Lim Liang Wei added 12 points each.

Yun Lee's Tan Kah Boon contributed 15 points, with Paul Wong Chuan and Ak Muhd Faizuladzmi Pg Tajudin each coming up with 11 points though it wasn't enough for the team to slump to their fourth straight loss.

Despite what looked like an easy win, BUB's Lim Chun Chich was quick to downplay his team's performance.

"We won because the other team didn't have their full squad not because we played exceptionally well," said the player.

"We weren't able to build on the double-digit lead we opened up in the second quarter. The momentum wasn't there ... We were just trading baskets after that," added Lim.

BUB's Jamri Ramlee scored his team's first six points and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Nambiar gave the team a 19-12 cushion at the end of the first quarter. Read More…

Big Bens leading the charge

Esmond Tan (L) of Chevrolet Cruze grabs a rebound against Lian Fu Restaurant in their Aewon Cup 2011 match last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong BEN SIM'S double-double of 38 points and 15 rebounds powered Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music to a 106-65 demolition of Brunei United Ballers (BUB) during their Aewon Cup 2011 match at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music, made up of national cagers, also had big contributions from Benjamin Lim with his double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds, an effort which included nailing six treys in the win.

Cavan Kong added added 15 points and Choo Yung Jian directed much of the traffic with eight assists to go with his 12 points.

BUB, comprising of national scheme players, saw Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili lead the way with 15 points while Lim Liang Wei and Hj Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili added 14 and 12 points respectively in the blowout loss.

The game was tight in the first quarter, despite Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music turning the ball over on multiple occassions, as they held onto a 22-17 lead heading into the second period.

Play time was over from that point onwards with Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music stepping up their man-to-man defence to limit their opponents to just six points in the 10-minute period for a 54-23 cushion at halftime.

"Playing against players who have gone through Coach K's (Kevin Reece) training scheme, we anticipated good stamina levels and were not disappointed with a competitive game," said Maxim Yap, the coach of Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music, during an interview with The Brunei Times, after the win. Leong Ming Seng had the game-high of 14 points to pace Lian Fu and Fang Bo Jun contributed 13 points in the triumph.

Soon Chin Long scored 13 points to lead LeApple and Ho Poh San added 12 points in the losing effort.

Lian Fu were the better team in the opening period but were made to rue their missed chances, unable to connect from the charity stripe despite drawing fouls early on.

The game remained close but it was a low scoring affair with Lian Fu ahead 11-9 heading into the second quarter.

LeApple, who are made up of the veteran national cagers, were struggling on offence with Lian Fu playing a 3-2 defensive strategy to cover the outside shooters.

Lian Fu were penetrating into the paint and playing a faster game but could not connect on any of their open shots, allowing LeApple to stay close, down 21-27 at halftime.

Having more stamina than their older opponents, Lian Fu, opened up a lead as large as seven points midway through the third period but a three-point play by Tony Tan brought LeApple to within one possession at 35-37 with three minutes to go in the stanza. Read More…

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music have walloped all those that have gone up against them, winning by an average margin of 29 points in their three games played.

They scored a physical 90-67 victory in their first game against Autoexperts before following up with a 101-70 thrashing of Yun Lee Motor Workshop on Tuesday.

Their latest triumph came yesterday in the form of a 86-54 beatdown against Lian Fu Restaurant.

Bosses, it's time to show your company's team spirit

Thursday, May 19, 2011

A representative from the Brunei Netball Association (BNA) (R) speaking to the media during yesterday's press conference. Picture: BT/ Fitri Shahminan EMPLOYEES of local companies are encouraged to participate in the first-ever inter-company basketball, futsal and netball competitions which will be held in conjunction with Brunei's month-long Labour Day celebrations.

Three Brunei sports organisations gathered yesterday in a press conference to shed more light on the upcoming multi-sports events.

All three competitions have yet to receive encouraging participation and, as a result, the co-organisers have decided to extend their registration deadlines.

Despite confirming that the basketball competition would still commence on May 29, the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) announced that the competition's last day for registration had been extended from the initial May 22 to a "later date".

Emphasising that a confirmed schedule for games would depend on the number of participants who register, the BBA encouraged those companies who have already established their respective in-house basketball teams to sign up while expressing hope that other companies would follow suit.

Meanwhile the Football Federation of Brunei Darussalam (FFBD), who has only received eight registrations so far, has extended the inter-company futsal registration deadline to May 29 and games will be held from June 3 to 5, starting at 7pm.

According to FFBD and GreenCity Concept, who are among the four event's co-organisers, the games will take place at the Sports Complex of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Read More…

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music thrash Yun Lee

Yun Lee Motor Workshop's Koh Wee Chian (L) driving to the hoop, being guarded by Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music's Soon Kian Leong during their Aewon Cup 2011 match yesterday.Picture: BT/ Raul Padernal A 30-POINT performance by Cavan Kong powered Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music to a 101-70 win over Yun Lee Motor Workshop in last night's Aewon Cup 2011 action.

Kong was deadly beyond the arc at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, his eight three-pointers instrumental in the team's second win in as many games.

A side made up of mostly national team players, point-guard Eugene Choo contributed 16 points to the victory.

The team beat Autoexperts 90-67 in their first game of the seven-team tournament on Sunday and are already looking like title contenders.

Le doux Patisserie/Sia N Tang Music never trailed after opening up a double digit lead late in the first quarter last night, building on their advantage with good pressure defense.

Their coach, though, feels his players can be more effective on the other end of the court.

"We played a slow game tonight. We were working on getting the players to gel, and though its better than our first game, we still can improve," said Maxim Yap.

"We didn't really play any of our set offenses ... We were just winging it.

"Of course we want to win this tournament but even if we don't, we have to send a message; the players who go to national coach Kevin Reece's training scheme have good stamina and an excellent drive to win," added Reece's assistant. Read More…

Ballers crush LeApple

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Lim Liang Wei (L) of Brunei United Ballers drives towards the basket during their Aewon Cup 2011 match against LeApple Bakery at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong BRUNEI United Ballers (BUB) picked up an easy 72-47 win over LeApple Bakery in the Aewon Cup 2011 last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Lim Liang Wei had a game-high of 19 points to pace BUB and Hj Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili added 16 points in the victory.

On the other hand, Lim Eng Ann was the only one in double figures for LeApple Bakery with 18 points all coming from three-point territory in a losing effort.

BUB got off to a better start connecting on their shots both from inside the paint and the outside to open up an 18-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

LeApple Bakery, who fielded the veteran national cagers, picked up their game a little in the second period relying on their long range shooting. Eng Ann had the hot hands, sinking three treys in the stanza.

LeApple Bakery managed to trim the deficit to 34-28, but were unlucky not to inch closer after Lee Huat Beng banked in a three-pointer that was waived off as he didn't beat the buzzer for halftime.

Being the younger team, BUB were exploiting the fact that LeApple Bakery didn't have the stamina to get back on defence. It resulted in BUB using their speed advantage to score in transition.

Liang Wei was the biggest factor, pouring in 10 third quarter points by penetrating to the hoop, and extending their lead to 56-40 going into the fourth period. Read More…

Lian Fu Restaurant cook up opener win

Monday, May 16, 2011

image LIAN FU Restaurant started off their campaign with a win holding off Yun Lee Motor Workshop 65-62 in the curtain raiser of the Aewon Cup 2011 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Lian Fu had their backcourt carrying much of the load with Jong How Kiat pouring in a game-high of 23 points and Chua Shi Xuan adding 17 points in the victory.

Yong Kui Seng topscored for Yun Lee with 16 points and Koh Wee Chian chipped in 10 points to the losing cause.

Both teams got off to a slow start, experiencing difficulties in adapting to playing the first match of the tournament.

Yun Lee had the size advantage but Lian Fu were penetrating into the paint to draw fouls that saw them stay up 16-15 heading into the second quarter.

Yun Lee were covering the lanes on defence but foul trouble was creeping in for them. Lian Fu were made to earn their points from the charity stripe and eventually led by as much as 12 points.

Yun Lee were stagnant on offence and weren't moving the ball around well enough as they trailed 27-36 at halftime.

However, Yun Lee managed to trim the deficit to five points but had their hands full with Jong weaving through their defence to score inside the paint to carry Lian Fu on offence.  Read More…

The Number 'Wan' in Manjaro Cup

Sunday, May 15, 2011

image WAN SING defied the odds with a good defensive performance to defeat tournament favourites Suci 89-72 in the final to be crowned champions of the 4th Manjaro Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night.

Four players hit double figures for Wan Sing with Danny Felicilda leading the way with 22 points and Marjomar Aying pouring in 17 points. Allan Caringal and Noel Grafil each chipped in 11 points in the victory.

On the other hand, Aries Castro scored a game-high of 24 points for Suci and Geve Leones added 19 points in a losing effort.

Wan Sing got off to a better start with Suci suffering from turnovers trying to get the ball into the paint.

Wan Sing would go on to score in transition and eventually open up a 22-16 lead heading into the second quarter.

It was the same story in the second period, but Wan Sing would soon be plagued by poor shooting from the outside and a 7-0 personal run by Leones would pull Suci to within 27-26 midway through the quarter.

It was a physical matchup and it was Wan Sing winning the battle of the boards that allowed them to stay on top 39-35 at halftime. Read More…

Manjaro serves up thriller final

Saturday, May 14, 2011

TONIGHT'S 4th Manjaro Cup final is one that should not be missed, a match which could only be described as a 'clash of the titans' as tournament favourites Suci take on Wan Sing at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Despite the hype, the last meeting between the two finalists was short of anything competitive, if based on the scoreline.

Suci just outclassed their opponents 97-63 last Friday in the second round of the competition.

So how will things be different this time around?

Suci have only lost once throughout the tournament and it was in the group stages where they lost 70-68 to Dermaline Beauty Therapy (Dermalogica).

It was wakeup call for the favourites and they have responded by playing like champions which included a 107-57 annihilation of the Seria Hawks in the semi-finals on Sunday.

The reason for their dominance thus far is simple Suci have got Geve Leones on their side.

The lanky Filipino has not been filling up the scoresheet as most of us are accustomed to, only because he has taken up the role of facilitator instead of scorer. Read More…

Thursday, May 12, 2011

DOES your company have a basketball team hungry for some competition? Then you are in luck!

The Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) yesterday held a press conference at Sunlit Advertising Sdn Bhd in Beribi to announce that the Inter-Company Basketball competition will be coming up at the end of the month.

It is held in conjunction with Brunei's Labour Day celebration and will begin on May 29 at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat.

The winners will receive $2,000 together with trophy and medals. Runners-up will receive $1,500 and third place will bag $1,000.

Suci bring down Seria Hawks

Monday, May 9, 2011

A STRONG second quarter performance by Suci paved the way for a blowout 107-57 win against the Seria Hawks last night, the result setting up a date with Wan Sing in Saturday's 4th Manjaro Cup final.

The tournament favourites were held 23-23 at the first quarter in a game which saw the lead change hands once every minute at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

But after pulling up their socks and outscoring their Belait-based opponents 21-5 in the second quarter, it became obvious there was only going to be one victor.

The second semi-final was a closer affair, with Wan Sing beating the GILR Wildcats 78-59.

If Suci's last encounter with Wan Sing was anything to go by, Vic Lemitarez looks poised to add the this year's trophy next to the one he won in 2009 with Palm Cafe.

Suci beat Wan Sing 97-63 in last Friday's group stage action and the Suci coach is already relishing their next meeting in the decider. Read More…

My mum, my superhero

Sunday, May 8, 2011

image SHE may lack retractable claws, the ability to stop time or even the gift of flight, but mother of four Sansan Hakim is in all essence of the word a superhero as described by 19-year-old Nicholas Wijayakusuma Horas.

The Upper Six Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College student, who is an active member in the local basketball scene, said that it was all due to his mother's encouragement that he still plays the game he loves today.

"I remember playing very badly once during the Brunei inter-school tournament. I got very angry and frustrated and wanted to quit the sport, but my mom kept encouraging me," he said.

"She told me that I will never know how good I can be as a basketball player if I stopped playing."

He added that her continued support had always been a source of comfort during games.

"She always makes it to my games and cheers me on. It is kind of embarrassing because she shouts like crazy but it is great to know that someone is always there for you." Read More…

The Wildcats were moving the ball well and scored from inside the paint.
