Paraiso scores 27 points as Hope demolish MDA

A DEEPER bench propelled Hope to a 79-55 victory over MDA in Group A of the 37 years old and below category for the 2010 Filipino Amateur Basketball (FAB) tournament last night at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

Jeff Paraiso had a game-high 27 points to lead Hope while Allan Caringal and Jolito Entapan each chipped in 12 points each.

On the other hand, Reggie Malinao topscored for MDA with 22 points and Denverwin Esteban contributed 12 points in a losing effort.

It was an evenly contested opening period with both teams coming out aggressive and attacking the painted area for points. Malianao, who stands at 6-foot-3, was doing all the work for MDA by collecting the rebounds and scoring from underneath the rim. However, Hope were ahead 15-14 heading into the second quarter.

It was a similar scenario in the second period but MDA went cold on offence as they failed to make their shots. They were dominating the boards but failed to capitalise on second chance opportunities.

Hope, on the other hand, picked up at the defensive end to outscore their opponents 14-5 for the period which saw them open up a 29-19 advantage at halftime.

Hope came out storming after the interval with a full court pressure defence allowing them to go on a 9-0 run in the opening minute. MDA had no answer to their opponents' watertight defence which resulted in them committing turnovers and gifting Hope with fastbreak points.

Hope had extended their lead to 44-25 midway through the period and could even rest their starters for their bench to get playing time. The rest of the quarter remained one way traffic as MDA relied on low percentage shots which allowed Hope to stay ahead 58-40 going into the final stanza.

There was no change in the fourth period with Hope playing defence and coming up with numerous steals. MDA were clearly exhausted in the period as they were limited to only six players most of the game which saw Hope cruise to victory. Read More...

Reece begins development programme

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

CHANGING the face of Brunei Basketball is what national basketball coach Kevin Reece aims to do as he started his national development programme a fortnight ago at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

"It's coming along good and the players realise that there is plenty of work ahead. They are coming around to understanding the nature of the programme and they realise the need to be fully dedicated in making it a successful one," said Reece, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday when met.

"I've seen some good things and players have been positive. They work hard even if they were to pick up injuries. However, there are some who will need to step up and be aware of what they are doing," added the California native.

"The talent pool is pretty evenly matched and all are starting at the same line at the moment," continued Reece, who is better known as Coach K.

Having been appointed at the position in late December, the national coach feels that there is plenty of work to be done starting from the basic fundamentals.

"The basic fundamentals of the players all need improvement at this point. If we work hard and keep focus, we should be able to meet the area of development needed," said Reece.

"Like passing, lay-ups, defence and footwork - are all still lacking at all levels including the national players. This is going to be a challenge for them," added the LA Lakers fan.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

THE all-Malay Liga Bumiputera are set to face their first test of the year when they compete in the annual Streetball Brunei 2010 which will start in the first week of March.

The last outing by the local cagers was in the LBC Cup organised by the Filipino Basketball Association (FBA) in October last year where they failed to make it into the quarter-finals.

"We are playing as a guest team but we're in the competition to prove that we can compete against the higher level players," said Wira Pori, the manager-cum-player of Liga Bumiputera, in an interview with The Brunei Times, yesterday.

"This is a good way for us to test and water and see where we stand against the big names amongst the Filipino players in the country," added Wira.

"We have a few changes in the line-up as we managed to attract some new talents to come and join us," continued Wira.

However, the team will still be missing the services of key players such as Ahmad Termizi HJ Nordeen and Zainul Ashyraf HUssin who are both away for their studies.

Despite that, Wira assures that the team are ready and expecting a good outing this time around with Barracudas reserves, Hj Md Rahmat HJ Suhaili and Jamri Ramlee, spearheading the team.

"We train two to three times a week in preparations for this. We are seeing this as some sort of tune up to prepare us and further improve for future competitions," said the manager.

In addition, the some of the players are undergoing training with the new national basketball coach, Kevin Reece, to help them develop further.

"Now with coach Reece having his development programme underway, we have some players joining and we have seen progress," said Wira.

"We're just going to utilise all the experience that the national coach has and learn as much as possible," concluded Wira.

A total of 13 teams separated into three groups are competing in the tournament.

Group A are made up of the GILR Wildcats, ISS Forex, Jinks and Liga Bumiputera while Group B comprised of Hope, KTC (Kiraong Tuesday Club), Ilocandia, Sold and Pizza Hut. Read More...

Patriots are ABL champions

Monday, February 22, 2010

THE Philippine Patriots were crowned the inaugural champions of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) yesterday after beating Satria Muda BritAma 75-67 in Game 3 of the best-of-five final series to take a 3-0 unassailable lead at the BritAma Arena in Indonesia yesterday.

Having won the first two games at home, it was the first time that the Patriots have ventured into enemy territory for the finals.

Satria Muda coach Fictor Roring's hopes of the home crowd serving as the 'sixth player' were dashed as the Patriots eventually flew back home a win in the end.

The champions' American import Gabe Freeman was not at his usual best last night, limited to only 17 points and 19 rebounds but his compatriot Jason Dixon shone bright in Jakarta, recording 28 points and 12 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the
season.

The Satria Muda's duo of Alex Hartman and Nakiea Miller, on the other hand, could only get 14 and 13 points respectively.

Louie Alas, the Patriots coach, credits the win to the team's defence.

"The whole season we really emphasised on defence, especially in this series," said Alas after their victory last night.

Having won Game 1 (at 78-68) and Game 2 (72-53), the Patriots only needed one more
win to secure the ABL crown.

The home crowd spurred Satria Muda to an early nine-point lead, at 14-5.

However, the hosts suffered a setback when Miller was poked in the eye by Patriots forward Jerwin Gaco.

The Patriots took advantage of his absence and fought back to get a four-point lead (35-31) at half-time. Read More...

Slashers beat Stingers in final

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, February 8, 2010

BILLED as the clash of the titans, it definitely lived up to its status and only one team stood at the end of the game.

The Ilonggo Slashers were crowned the champions as they edged the Ilonggo Stingers 72-63 in the final of the Brunei Shell Recreational Club (BSRC) five-on-five Open basketball tournament at the Mumong Sports Complex in Kuala Belait last night.

Geve Leones had a game-high of 19 points to lead the Ilonggo Slashers while Vincent Superio and Elvin Requintin each chipped in 12 points.

On the other hand, Rio Oblido topscored for the Ilonggo Stingers with 13 points.

It was the Ilonggo Stingers that got going early on as they took an 18-14 advantage heading into the second quarter.

However, the Ilonggo Slashers replied in the second period and began to play better defence that saw them take the lead at 34-33 at halftime.

Both teams continued to battle neck and neck with the front court of both sides suffering from foul trouble.

It was down to the wire with the scoreboard reading 53-all going into the final stanza.

With about six minutes left to go, the tides clearly changed as the Ilonggo Slashers began to rally behind Leones, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition, as they stormed to victory.

"Our opponents had the height advantage which really made things difficult. In addition, our front court players were suffering from foul trouble but I guess we were lucky in the fourth quarter to go for the win," said Lito Porlahe, the playing coach of the Ilonggo Slashers, in an interview with The Brunei Times, after the victory.

"I'm very satisfied with the performance and so are the players. It's good to pick up our first championship of the year," added Porlahe.

Meanwhile, his counterpart, Rhaul Palma Jr, the head coach of the Ilonggo Stingers, found the defeat hard to swallow as calls by the referees didn't go their way.

"We have to give credit to our opponents but some calls by the referees affected my players. Their frustration got to them and they eventually let the game slip away," said Palma.

"I was telling them to focus and concentrate, but it was too late as the momentum was already with our opponents."

Arnel Aldovino, the chairman of the BSRC basketball committee, said the tournament was a huge success.

"Everything went well and the main aim was to entertain the crowd. The players all showed good sportsmanship and it was all good fun. In addition, the response from the crowd was good as well ... we had a full house for the final," said Aldovino, who was present to give away the prizes to the winners.

"Now we're looking forward to prepare our team to compete in the National Sports Festival (PSK) and we hope we can win the gold after winning silver the last time out," added Aldovino.

A trick shot challenge was also held at halftime with Rollin Castillo of the Ilonggo Stingers bagging the prize.

Slashers, Stingers ready for war

Sunday, February 7, 2010

IT is the clash of the titans befitting the championship match of the Brunei Shell Recreational Club (BSRC) five-on-five Open basketball tournament to be held at the Mumong Sports Complex in Kuala Belait today.

Tagged as the favourites to enter the final, it will be the battle of the Ilonggos with the Ilonggo Slashers taking on the Ilonggo Stingers in the final set to tip off at 6pm.

The Ilonggo Slashers were the champions of the 2008 Aewon's Sultan Cup after they defeated Tumasek, the 2008 national team, 97-86 to lift the trophy.

The Ilonggo Slashers will once again be banking on Geve Leones, who was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in that competition, to lead the team on offence.

In addition, he was also chosen the MVP for the 111th Philippine Independence Basketball Cup last year.

However, Lito Porlahe, the playing coach of the Ilonggo Slashers, is playing down their status as the favourites to win the tournament.

"They are a very strong team. I believe that they have the height and size advantage so we'll have to work extra hard at the defensive end," said Porlahe in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday. Read More...

Serious about basketball

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Kuhan Foo, the Asean Basketball League's (ABL) CEO, was in Brunei recently. YEE CHUN LEONG met the 40-year-old Malaysian to learn more about the regional league

Q: What is the purpose of your visit to Brunei?

A: We (the ABL) are trying to get the ABL matches shown on Brunei TV (RTB). We want to see games and highlights from the league aired on local TV.

We want to help Bruneians understand the ABL more. Just like Kuala Lumpur (Dragons) and Singapore (Slingers), the players are also involved in the media, for example they get invited to talk shows and have fun.

Q: Why did your team come up with the Asean Basketball League which is the first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region?

A: The ABL was Tony Fernandez's (the CEO of AirAsia) idea. It is his dream to promote sports through private investors and run it on a professional basis.

In addition, we want to create a professional platform for development of the sport in the region.

Take for example, the Under-14 and Under-17 categories, one day we might even get a 14-year-old player who progresses through the ranks and plays for a professional team. Read More...

Stingers, Slashers have final date

Saturday, February 6, 2010

THE Ilonggo Stingers easily defeated BSRC-Sunnybee 106-66 in the semi-finals of the Brunei Shell Recreational Club (BSRC) five-on-five Open basketball tournament last night to book a date with the Ilonggo Slashers in the final tomorrow.

The Ilonggo Stingers had five players in double figures with Lowey Jee Palma leading the way with 23 points while Cesar Asaldo contributed 20 points.

On the other hand, Yap Chun Ping topscored for BSRC-Sunnybee with 14 points and Mark See chipped in 12 points in a losing effort.

According to Rhaul Palma Jr, the head coach of the Ilonggo Stingers, it was their man-to-man defence right from the start that led to the lopsided victory.

"We controlled the match right from the start as we realised that they haven't got a legitimate point guard," said Palma, in an interview with The Brunei Times, after the victory.

"All the players responded well and we managed to contain their shooters. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going heading into the final." Read More...

Cesar rules as Stingers win again

Tuesday, February 2, 2010
THE Ilonggo Stingers continued their winning run with a 110-64 victory over Easyway in Group B to advance to the semi-finals of the Brunei Shell Recreational Club (BSRC) five-on-five Open basketball tournament at the Mumong Sports Complex in Kuala Belait last night.

Cesar Asaldo topscored for the Ilonggo Stingers with 21 points and Lowey Jee Palma contributed 16 points.

On the other hand, Lim Chun Sian led Easyway with 17 points and Lee Khoy Yuan chipped in 14 points in a losing effort.

According to Raul Palma, the head coach of Ilonggo Stingers, both teams started strongly but his players quickly took control when they switched to a 1-2-2 defence, containing their opponents' shooters to cruise to victory.

"The team played well tonight (Monday night) and they executed brilliantly. Everyone contributed to the victory," said Raul in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

Asked about the semi-finals, Raul replied: "We still have one more game left and it is against another unbeaten team (DMD) in the group. It's going to decide who will top the group so we'll focus on that first."

Meanwhile, Steven Cheong of Easyway found it a difficult loss to swallow as it put them out of contention for the semi-finals.

"It was a wasted opportunity. We needed to win but we lost badly as one of our main players (Choo Yung Jian) and our coach couldn't make it to the game," said Cheong. Read More...

Pilgrim writes to his Brunei fans

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

IT was a very good season an exciting and fun-filled year with the Barracudas and Brunei fans.

They say that people will remember fondly those that they leave behind, and likewise Brunei and the fans will always have a special place in my heart. I'm not trying to score brownie points here that's a sincere truth.

I never thought my time in Brunei would end so soon and never wanted it to end the way it ended.

One thing I will never forget and always appreciate about my 'Bruneian family' is the way the fans always showed their love and support through the highs and lows of the season. This, in my opinion, reflects the resilience and determination of a great country.

I enjoyed being a part of a culture that graciously invited in the unfamiliar and embraced me with open arms.

I would also like to thank my ex-teammate (the Barracudas' first American import) Lonnie Jones for his patience and time he put in in Brunei.

A lot has been said about him, but I just want to stress that he was indeed a positive figure in his short tenure with the Barracudas and a voice of reason among his teammates.

Lastly, I would like to thank all my fans in Brunei once again for all the support.

Terima kasih, Brunei! Read More...

ABL playoffs: Advantage Patriots and Slingers

Monday, February 1, 2010

THE Philippine Patriots started off the first leg of the semi-finals of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) brightly by trumping KL Dragons 77-43 at the Ynares Sports Arena, in Manila.

The top three scorers of the match came from the Patriots with former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Best Import Gabe Freeman scoring a game-high 15 points, compatriot Jason Lamar Dixon contributing 13 and Val Acuna chipping in 12 points.

Rudy Lingganay was the Dragons' top scorer with 10 points, followed by American Jamal Brown and Malaysian Shee Fai Loh, each with seven points.

The Patriots never gave the Dragons a chance as they led 12-2 midway through the first quarter. The Dragons could not find their way through the Patriots' zone defence and had to rely only on the three-pointers. This gave the hosts an 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Patriots owed their domination to Freeman the American forward's importance was highlighted when he scored on the rebound to make it 30-16 at halftime.

The 24-year-old American was the lead scorer at the break with nine points, followed by teammate Warren Ybanez with seven.

Besides this, the Dragons too kept committing turnovers and wasting their chances to help the Patriots keep their lead. Read More...

Barracudas going 'local' next season

Saturday, January 30, 2010

THE Barracudas are going local slowly but surely to help boost their chances of a playoff appearance in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) next season.

Brunei's first professional basketball team exited the league's inaugural season last Sunday after they fell 65-87 to the Philippine Patriots at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila.

One of the Barracudas' main weaknesses in the just-concluded season was arguably their bench. The Brunei side were forced to press break their opponents' full court pressure defence in almost all their matches because they lacked good players on the bench.

"It is entirely up to the local players to show what they can do next season. I've got a training programme to prepare them in the off season and hopefully they can prove themselves," said Bong Ramos, the Barracudas head coach, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"In addition, new local players might be included to the roster. But it depends on whether these players can show us what they can do. The most important thing for a player, however, is to possess a positive attitude," added Ramos. Read More...

Larry, Avenido enjoy playing for Barracudas

Thursday, January 28, 2010

THEIR contracts may have ended after their Asean Basketball League (ABL) season but the Barracudas imports will treasure their playing time in the Sultanate.

The Barracudas had announced on Monday that all their imports - American Reggie Larry, Australian Simon Conn and Filipinos Francis "Kiko" Adriano, Don Camaso and Leo Avenido - have all been released after their season came to an end last Sunday with a 65-87 loss to the Philippine Patriots at the Ynares Sports Arena.

"My experience playing here was great and I really had a lot of fun. However, I wish we are still in the play-offs at this stage," said Larry in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

The American pointed out that he came to Brunei with the motive of helping the team as much as possible to make a run for the play-offs and at the same time make a good name for himself with his time here for a better future.

"The thing I liked most about here was that every home game, more and more fans would to come to the match. I believe that it was because we managed to get them excited about basketball," said the 23-year-old. Read More...

Barracudas looking forward to next season

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

THE Barracudas may have failed to make it to the play-offs of the Asean Basketball League (ABL), but they still have something to be proud of, having a 6-8 win-loss record in the inaugural league.

"The way I look at it, the team actually overachieved. At the start of the season, a lot of people probably expected for the Brunei team to end the season in the last position," said Bong Ramos, the Barracudas head coach, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday when met at the Brunei International Airport.

"However, I'm happy and proud that it had to go down to the last game to determine who would make it to the play-offs. It's too bad we lost but I'm sure the other teams didn't expect us to be in that position for a chance at the play-offs," added Ramos.

The team's season ended on Sunday when they fell 87-65 to the Philippine Patriots, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila.

A victory for them would have seen the Bruneians through to the play-offs.

"The aim was to make it to final four but I guess it was just not our time. Winning six games in the league against countries which Brunei have never beaten before is history itself," said the ex-Indonesia national coach. Read More...
