The invitation to the league was revealed by Romeo Adducul, the centre for Philippine Basketball Association’s Purefood team who was in town for a short visit.

Brunei national cagers benefit from long rest

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Saturday, July 25, 2009

WITH the Sultan Cup basketball tournament postponed indefinitely due to Influenza A (H1N1), members of the national team are enjoying the long rest.

The team have been looking forward to the tournament organised by the Brunei Basketball Association, hoping to redeem themselves from last year's 97-86 loss in the final to Ilonggo Slashers held at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

Head coach Tony Tan said the national team haven't had much preparation due to lack of venue.

"We haven't been training because we haven't got a proper venue," said Tan. The BBA court where they usually practice is always fully-booked.

"Right now, the players are training on their own," he said.

The postponement of the annual tournament held in conjunction with His Majesty's Birthday celebrations also benefitted main player Esmond Tan, who is recovering from injury.

Esmond Tan "The postponement is allowing time for my players to rest especially my main player Esmond Tan who is still nursing an ankle injury he sustained before we left for the Borneo Cup last month in Miri. But I'm glad that he's recovering well," said the coach.

Tony expects the Filipino teams to put up a strong challenge for his national team.

But he is optimistic that his team will be able to finish in the top four.

"I believe that my team is good enough to make it to at least the semi finals this year again," Tony said.

Point guard, Yap Chun Ping, shared the opinion of his coach regarding the advantage of the postponement.

"This is good because it is really giving me time to nurse my injuries especially my back and shoulder," said Yap.

"I hope that they won't delay the tournament for too long though as it can be seen that the numbers of infected for H1N1 have decreased in the country," added Yap.

The national team, representing Hyundai Setia Motors, had a successful campaign at the 2009 Belait Sultan's Cup earlier this month.

Banking on Jong Guo Zhang's buzzer-beating three-pointer, the national team defeated SKS Stingers 79-78 at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria.

We Are All Witnesses: Confiscated Lebron James camp tapes released.

Last July 8, Some of the top high school and college basketball players in the US have gathered in the annual Lebron James Skills Academy camp.

In a video shown above; a college player Jordan Crawford of Xavier apparently threw down a two-handed dunk on James. According to sources that a Nike representative confiscated those tapes from the two videographers, Nike officials sent a warning to campers and the news media and journalists earlier on; what happens at LeBron’s Camp stays at LeBron’s Camp. Or, at least they make sure that it doesn’t end up posted in YouTube and beyond. Obviously the journalist violated the policy.

Everybody gets dunked on. They’re making it a bigger deal than it should be. It’s undeniable that Jordan Crawford is a rising star; If I were Nike they should make a Lebron commercial from it or maybe sign Jordan Crawford otherwise other brands will.

RP opens Jones Cup bid vs Jordan

TAIPEI – Powerade-Team Pilipinas opens its bid in the 31st William Jones Cup campaign today against Jordan, the very squad that dashed the country’s hopes of a return stint to the Olympics two years ago.

Game time is set at 5 p.m. at the Hsinchuang gym following the opening matches pitting Lebanon against Taiwan-B at 1 p.m. and South Korea against Kazakhstan at 3 p.m.

A 30-minute inaugural ceremony is set at 7 p.m.

Led by point guard Rasheim Wright, who had 24 points, the Jordanians ended the Philippines’ bid to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics following an 84-76 victory in the preliminary round of the 24th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship in Tokushima, Japan.

Though the Jones Cup, held in honor of the founding secretary-general of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), is nothing more than a top-caliber tune-up tournament for the the FIBA Asia World Championship qualifier in Tianjin, China next month, the games will nevertheless give the competing teams a chance to size up each other’s strength.

Facing Jordan in the opener is especially significant for the Nationals. – Nelson Beltran

Beermen bag Fiesta Cup crown - Overpowers Ginebra in Game 7

By Musong R. Castillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - Laced with superstars in every position after a never-ending buildup over the years, San Miguel Beer finally achieved what it was built to do.

Throwing the full weight of their offensive armada at Barangay Ginebra and adding tough defense in between, the Beermen ended a four-year title drought last night by winning the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup after a clinical 90-79 Game 7 dismantling of the Gin Kings in front of 20,541 screaming souls at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen jumped out of the gates hard, zoomed to several 17-point leads in the third quarter before emphatically weathering numerous Ginebra rallies in the fourth to jack up their all-time high collection of championships to 18.

Jonas Villanueva, a few nights after being named the season’s Most Improved Player, bagged the PBA Press Corps’ Fern-C Finals MVP plum after norming 11 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists, edging out the rejuvenated Danny Ildefonso in the balloting.

The two teamed up in the play that ended all Ginebra hopes late in the fourth, as Villanueva fed Ildefonso in a fastbreak play that gave San Miguel an 83-72 cushion, going into the last 2:21.

After a hot first half where they took a 10-point lead, the Beermen shifted to high gear in the third, taking a couple of 17-point leads, the last at the 4:24 mark, as Dondon Hontiveros skipped into the lane and tossed in an awkward shot that gave San Miguel a 63-46 advantage. Read More...

Brunei Cup: The Game of Champion WON’T return this year.

bruneicuplogo In a recent phone interview with Alan Lim of MVP Event Management Co, the organizer of the annual basketball tournament held every August, that this years anticipated Brunei Cup has been cancelled and expected to return next year.

According to Alan that there are few reasons why it was cancelled; First, Ramadan, the month of fasting is expected to begin on or around August 22, 2009 and will finish on or around September 20, 2009. Fasting month comes early this year and coincides with the schedule of the games.

2nd, Due to the rise of H1N1 cases here locally, it’s a precautionary move to cancel the said event since it’s an invitational tournament in the region; teams coming all the way from Australia, Jordan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Saudi Arabia and The Philippines are invited to participate.

3rd, If they move the schedule to a later time this year after the Ramadan, PBA teams from the Philippines won’t be available to join. This is because of the drastic change of the seasonal calendar in the PBA; hence they reduced the number of conferences from three to two and change the start of the season from March to July for the Fiesta Conference were imports are allowed to play and October to February for the Philippine Cup, called All-Filipino Conference previously. Conflict of the date as well.

PTE Katok cagers win U19 tourney

James Kon

PTE Katok basketball team came back from a double-digit deficit to defeat Laksamana College 75-61 in the final to emerge as the champion in the U19 Brunei-Muara District Basketball tournament yesterday at the Batu Bersurat Basketball Court.

Point guard Jon Lee of PTE Katok, on fire during the match up, scored 29 points, including 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

However, PTE Katok started off on the wrong footing when they trailed Laksamana College by 9-18 in the first quarter following a number of costly turnovers.

The game then started to tilt in favour of the faster PTE Katok team in the second quarter following consecutive points pumped in by Jon Lee and No 15 Liang. Both men dumped 14 points in 10 minutes to cut Laksamana College's lead.

Going into the interval, Laksamana led 28-16.

After the break, PTE Katok started to move up the tempo with a full court press and fast break offense. The strategy worked perfectly against the short-handed Laksamana Team, which only had one substitute player.

Exhausted and in foul trouble, Laksamana College's lead was turned into a deficit by PTE Katok. No 6 Nic managed to hit six crucial, consecutive points to help take PTE Katok into the lead for the first time.

At the end of the third quarter, it was PTE Kotak leading 41-39. Read More...

PTE Katok win MD Cup title

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

JON LEE sizzled in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points to lead Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) to a 75-61 victory over Laksamana College of Business (LCB) in the finals of the 2009 MD Cup yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Court in Batu Bersurat.

"I just felt a rush and pushed it with all I got. I knew it wasn't over so I had to score more for my team to win," said Lee, who went on to score a game high 29 points. "I saw a lot of gaps in our opponents defence and so I just had to cut in and kept getting fouled.

Lee, 17, commented that with their unbeaten run of seven games in the tournament, he hopes they will be able to participate in more competitions in the future.

It was a seesaw battle in the fourth quarter as both exchanged leads several times in the period before Lee came up with back-to-back baskets when LCB got into the penalty halfway.

It made matters worse when LCB had two players fouled out of the game and had to play with only four players before PTE Katok ran away for the victory.

LCB were hot in the early going holding their opponents to just nine points in the first quarter and scoring at will to take a 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

PTE Katok were shaken but tried to fight back by staging an 8-0 run and leaving their opponents scoreless for more than four minutes before LCB got a three-pointer through their captain Hii Wen Leong to break the drought to bring the score to 21-17. Read More...

Favourites PTE Katok wary of LCB

Jason Thomas

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

LCB KATOK SIXTH FORM CENTRE (PTE Katok) refuse to be tagged as favourites heading into today's 2009 MD Cup final against Laksamana College of Business (LCB) at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

Unbeaten throughout the two-week long competition which started on June 30, PTE Katok beat Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) 65-48 in Sunday's semi-final to book their berth in the championship match.

LCB edged the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) 59-53 to reach the final.

Having lost to them once, PTE Katok coach said that LCB would be prepared for his team in the final.

"It could go both ways, I really don't think we're the favourites," said Maxim Yap in a telephone interview yesterday.

"We beat them in the previous round (62-46) but I know they will have learnt from that loss and will be ready for us.

PTE Katok "It was a neck-and-neck game against them the last time, but they let go towards the end," said Yap, adding that he was sure LCB would not be giving up so easily in the final.

Yap said that he would stick to the strategy used during their first match against LCB though he did not elaborate and that he had instructed his players to focus more on defence during today's game.

An ankle sprain to one of the team's main players might affect their performance, said Yap, adding that LCB had a very good centre, who is sure to make life under the boards difficult for PTE Katok. Read More...

PTE Katok, LCB in MD Cup final

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, July 13, 2009

PTE Katok KATOK SIXTH FORM CENTRE (PTE Katok) and Laksamana College of Business (LCB) scored contrasting wins yesterday to arrange a title showdown in the 2009 MD Cup basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

National player Soon Jian Liang scored 22 points while Jamri Ramlee chipped in 17 points as PTE Katok clobbered Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) 65-48 to reach the championship round with a clean slate.

LCB, on the other hand, got 24 points from forward Thian Bii Soon to pull through 59-53 against Science College (MSPSBS).

The final will be played on Tuesday at 2:30pm right after the battle for third place match between MSPSBS and SOASC at 1.30pm.

"We were quite fortunate to win today as our players did their job. Our opponents played with the 1-2-2 defence formation so it was easy for us to penetrate their defence starting from the high post. Their defence was to defend our shooters so we had to play inside," said PTE Katok head coach Maxim Yap, whose team defeated LCB 62-46 in the elimination round.

MSPSBS managed to take the first period 15-14 but LCB bounced back and limited MSPSBS main scorers Han Ming Kwang and Khoo Chin Kai to grab the upperhand 28-26 at halftime.

LCB had to play a different game in the third period as they got into foul trouble early with only two substitutes on the bench. They managed to keep themselves in the game by being consistent on making baskets at every possession.MSPSBS's big headache was LCB forward Thian Bii Soon, who kept on slicing through their defence. Unbeaten PTE Katok in MD Cup semis

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, July 12, 2009

00202 KATOK SIXTH FORM CENTRE (PTE Katok) demolished Maktab Duli (MD) 'A' 67-47 to keep their unbeaten slate and marched into the semi-finals of the 2009 MD Cup yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

National player Soon Jian Liang, who scored 15 points, dominated the low post for PTE Katok, who raced to a 15-2 lead halfway through the first period before returning to their dugout with a 35-16 advantage.

Nicholas Wee Chyuan Seng finished with 18 points for PTE Katok, who posted their biggest lead at 60-31.

Joven Umali had a game high 25 points as MD 'A' held a 12-2 rally to cut the deficit to 62-43.

"Towards the end, we were losing on rebounds but then I'm glad to see the team moving around better in the zone area. They have really shown improvement eventhough our shooting was a bit off today," said PTE Katok head coach Maxim Yap.

Yap, when asked on what he thinks about meeting, SOASC replied, "This is a very highly anticipated match for us. We have to learn on how to break their full court press but we just have to defend well by covering the lanes just like how we did on our meeting with LCB."

In other game, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) pulled off a 71-67 victory over MD 'B.'

Both teams played well in the first half which ended with MD 'B' leading 34-31. Read More...

Science College cruise to semis

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Saturday, July 11, 2009

00152 SCIENCE COLLEGE (MSPSBS) were the first team to secure passage into the semi-finals of the 2009 MD Cup, led by their senior players Khoo Chin Kai and Han Ming Kwang who each contributed 20 points, after easily beating Maktab Duli (MD) 'B' 72-49 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

Both teams started brightly but MSPSBS were the more tenacious of the two and managed to open up a 17 points lead halfway through the opening half before MD 'B' mounted a small comeback to reduce that deficit and end the period down 10 points at 32-22.

MSPSBS continued to push in the second half and tried to extend their lead but both teams were equal at their offensive ends exchanging baskets to bring the scores to 47-38 halfway through the period.

MSPSBS were not ready to let go of their lead as they did in the previous game. Everyone on the team looked hungry and were determined to advance to the next round.

MD 'B' couldn't get anything going for the final 10 minutes of the period as they struggled to even get back on defence as their opponents began to run riot in the game.

MD 'B' began to look tired, committing unforced turnovers and couldn't execute anything on offence allowing their opponents to exploit those weaknesses to score on fastbreaks and run away with victory.

MD 'B' were led by Wong Ha Shiong with 14 points and Denis Chee with 13 points.

"Today's (Friday's) game was great! Everyone on the team stepped up their game and played with high energy. It's good that everyone played well today," said MSPSBS captain Khoo.

MSPSBS, however, will have to wait to know their opponents either Laksamana College of Business (LCB) or Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) from Group A.

MD 'A' still stand a chance to advance but it would take them a miracle after their 84-42 demolition by LCB the day before.

"We have to improve on our defence especially inside the paint because the teams we will face next have the size advantage," said Khoo when asked about their next opponents. Read More...

Maktab Duli 'B' advance

Jason Thomas

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Thursday, July 9, 2009

00244 MAKTAB DULI 'B' cruised to a comfortable 89-75 win over International School Brunei (ISB) in their 2009 Maktab Duli (MD) Cup match yesterday to confirm their berth in the next round.

Though ISB's good passing opened up a 11-6 lead inside the first few minutes of the game at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat, a series of turnovers saw the MD turn the tides to edge ISB 19-18 half-way through the period.

It was a lead they would not relinquish, with their good inside passing and superior rebounding opening up a double-digit lead three minutes before the break.

MD's tight defence also saw them keep their opponents outside the paint and they would enjoy a 40-27 advantage heading into the second period.

ISB started the second half strongly, concentrating on a full-court press that they would keep at until the game's final minutes.

But that strategy also contributed to their downfall, losing numerous points on the fast-break when they failed to get back on defence.

Just like in the first half, ISB still failed to assert themselves under the basket, lacking any big men they could count on for rebounds. Read More...

LCB advance to 2nd round at MD Cup

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

00160 LAKSAMANA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS (LCB) banked on the brilliant performance of Darren Wong to advance to the next round of the MD Cup 2009 yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Wong did his usual work in the paint and finished with a game-high 29 points as LCB demolished Maktab Duli (MD) 'B' 71-51 for their second straight win in Group C.

The game was close in the first half with LCB taking a 30-26 lead.

LBC picked up their defence and forced MD 'B' to commit several errors in the ensuing play.

With 10 minutes left in the game, LCB continued to dominate the boards both at the offensive and defensive ends to extend their lead to 46-36.

LCB kept their momentum and with better teamwork pushed the ball up the court quickly on every possession to post a commanding 62-41 advantage going into the final five minutes.

Team captain of LCB, Hii Wen Leong, said they have been playing together from secondary school so they haven't had much training.

"We know that our opponents have the size advantage so in the second half, we decided to use our speed to win the game," said Hii.

When asked on what he thinks of entering into the next round, Hii replied, "We respect our opponents and treat them as strong teams but we will try our best and win every game."

Wong Ha Shiong scored 19 points while Hung Jiunn Nan chipped in 18 points for MD 'B' which must win today's game against International School Brunei at 3pm to join LCB in the second round.

"We just have to strengthen our defence and try our best to win," said Hung, team captain of MD 'B'.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, MD 'A', Katok Sixth Form Centre Science College and Maktab Sains have earlier qualified to the next round.

MD Cup: PTE Katok survive CHMS test

Jason Thomas

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

00231 THE Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) survived a late scare from Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) to win their 2009 Maktab Duli (MD) Cup match 75-55 yesterday.
With a comfortable 34-14 lead at half-time against the Bandar Seri Begawan team, PTE Katok looked set to win the match at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

But with centre Soon Kian Leong forced to the bench after picking up his fourth foul, CHMS took the chance to pounce on the lack of big men under the basket and came up with a good run of points to start the second half.

Both teams were looking to fast break at every opportunity but CHMS looked more suited for that tactic in the second period, wearing their opponents down with their pace and slowly dominating the rebounds category.

CHMS clawed back to 41-25 after five minutes and were just down 50-44 mid-way through the half.

CHMS also were able to produce several second-chance points, continuing to take advantage of their opponents' lack of height and pulling to within three points five minutes from time.

Jamri Ramlee contributed some rebounds and was one of the go-to-guys on the attack, but more players needed to step up if PTE Katok were to maintain their lead.

In the end it was Jon Lee who managed to keep PTE Katok in the game, running the plays and coming up with several key baskets in what turned out to be a 30-point performance from the ball-handler.  Read More...

MD 'A' keep 100pc record

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, July 5, 2009

00236 A SHOW of good defense towards the end of the game kept Maktab Duli (MD) A's unbeaten run intact at the 2009 MD Cup scoring a 51-42 victory over Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

SOASC started out hot on offence and led by seven points in the first half but MD 'A' were resilient and managed to cut the deficit to end the half down 20-22.

SOASC suddenly went cold at the end of the first half and had a scoring draught that lasted for seven minutes. They only got back to scoring ways after four minutes into the second half.

It was a see-saw battle between these two teams as neither side managed to gain control of the game.

SOASC again went ice cold late in the game and didn't have anything in them on offence as MD 'A' picked up their defence and saw SOASC score their last basket with about six minutes left in the game. MD 'A' then cruised to victory.

Head coach of MD 'A', Goh Kok An, said his team's experience landed them the victory.

"Our team played well today (Saturday). We felt more comfortable late in the game but what was most important was that we picked up our defence towards the end," said Goh.

MD 'A' had a balanced attack at the offensive end and were led by Joven Umali with 13 points and Nelson Chen You Kuan with 12 points.

Leong Ching Onn led SOASC with 20 points followed by Lee Kar Jun with 10 points. Read More...

Queenielin end rivals' Hope

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, July 6, 2009

queenielin2009 QUEENIELIN/SOFTLAB were crowned the champions of the 111th Philippine Independence Basketball Cup after defeating Hope 118-90 in the final yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Contrary to yesterday's report in The Brunei Times, Hope defeated Darul Trustee Remittance Landbank 96-88 to reach the final and not Archmedia/B-Mobile as mentioned.

Both teams began brightly yesterday but Queenielin/Softlab soon started out with their 1-3-1 full court pressure defence and managed to take the edge to end the first period on an 11-4 run to lead 25-19.

In the second quarter, both teams tried to battle for the lead but Queenielin/Softlab stood their ground and kept their lead at 48-41 to take it into the break.

There was a change of pace when the teams came out after halftime as both came out storming but Queenielin/Softlab soon took control of the quarter led by Lhito Porlahe with 10 straight points off the bench to outscore their opponents 35-26 to further extend their lead to 83-67 at the end of the period.

The fourth quarter was no different as Hope began to tire while Queenielin/Softlab ran amok with Aries Castro and Mark Porlahe setting up a shooting clinic. Queenielin/Softlab quickly ran away with the match.

"The best thing about today's (Sunday's) game was that everyone gave it their all and supported each other in search of a win," said Lhito, the coach-cum-player of Queenielin/Softlab.

"We want to be able to do the same thing next year but now we would like to try to win the Ambassador's Cup," added Lhito, who also bagged the Best Coach award.

Asked what's next on the team's schedule, Lhito said: "We are all busy preparing for the upcoming Sultan Cup to be held in a few weeks' time."
