"Did I? It doesn't matter," he replied when asked what he felt about leading the scoring charts.

Sim was also the top scorer in SKS' semi-final game against Hyatt.

"We expected it would be a tough game and we never expected to lose. But a win is a win, be it by one point or by 10.

"Our mental toughness won us the game and D'Babes were looking a bit sluggish towards the end. Cesar Asaldo had a big second half.

"The coach (Rhaul Palma Jr.) gave us a few pointers and we went out and executed," he said of their 9-2 run at the start of the second half which opened up a 10-point lead (52-42) which they rode out for the win.

Red-hot D'Babes in semis

Friday, June 24, 2011

D'Babes (in pink) moved into the semi-finals of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament after a hard-fought 68-61 win over BSRC last night. Picture; BT/ Jason Thomas D'BABES (ABMS S/B) progressed to the semi-finals of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament after a hard-fought 68-61 win over Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) in last night's Group A action.

The result at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat books them a date with Group B winners Istana Maintenance Department (IMD) tomorrow, with the winners advancing to the final.

BSRC, meanwhile, have nothing left to play for.

Last night's victory was largely due to D'Babes' strong second quarter performance, outscoring BSRC 20-8 in the period to take a sizable 20-point lead (43-23) into the break.

With the partisan crowd behind their back, D'Babes shifted gears in the second period and BSRC were unable to handle their fast-paced, run-and-gun style of play. Read More… The Brunei Times

Singing when you're winning

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

HATE. A feeling of intense or passionate dislike for (someone).
The national basketball team, under the banner of Soon Lee-Easyway 'A', celebrate with Kevin Reece (in white), the national basketball coach, after their 113-53 triumph over Hata Rekajaya Sdn Bhd in the final of the 2010 Goh Hock Kee Cup in July last year at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT file
My parents, family members, mentors and friends groom me to persevere; to have tough skin and to be immune to all negativity. They also said that no matter how good or successful one is, you'll never capture the hearts and souls of everyone.

I arrived here in Brunei roughly 15 months ago, excited and in high spirits, ready to turn around the state of basketball here in Brunei and get it back on track, but with that came a cloud of skepticism and also of support. Everybody had something to say about Coach K and even some tried to assassinate my character with outright lies. It was in the words of Mike Tyson "Ludicrous". Even on the blogs it got downright dirty; some even went as far as using racial overtones.

Through it all I kept the morals that was instilled in me as a child and with my dignity and strength. I can refer this back to my grandmother's teachings and upbringing and I would hear her voice telling me to refrain; and not to retaliate or to react, because then I would give the haters and naysayers their day.

The other day I had lunch with one of the sponsors for the national team with a few players. He started teasing the guys as we all were posing for pictures. He said to the guys, "remember how scared you were when coach first started training you all," then said to me, "coach they were so frightened of you that they didn't even want to be caught alone with you unless somebody was there with them". I was so shocked and amazed that they were so afraid of me at first. Read More…. The Brunei Times

Don fires again: Mordeno drives Ford past NBT

In another spectacular offensive showing, Mordeno poured in 58 points to lift Ford (Premier Motor Co S/B) to a 79-75 victory over NBT in Group B of the second round of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament last night.

This followed his 56-point performance in the 74-70 triumph over B-Mobile on Saturday.

Contested at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, Gary B added 14 points in yesterday's win.

On the other hand, Armando Estoesta topscored for NBT with 24 points and Rodocfo H M chipped in 14 points in a losing effort.

The game saw a see-saw affair in the opening period and Ford got right to their strategy which was to put the ball in Mordeno's hands. He didn't disappoint, getting the high pick and roll running to lead Ford to a 20-16 advantage heading into the second quarter. Read More…

Merciless SKS punish JCMK

Monday, June 20, 2011

VERDICT? Practise more. Much more.

Favourites SKS totally outclassed JCMK (QAF S/B) in the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament last night, handing them a 168-31 mauling they won't soon forget.
An SKS player goes for an easy lay up against JCMK (QAF S/B) during their Inter-Company Basketball Tournament match last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/Jason Thomas
It was their sixth straight win in the competition at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, and one which puts them through to the semi-finals from Group A.

Relentless from the first minute, SKS had built a mammoth 55-point lead to head into the second half 67-12.

Seldom do fans at Brunei's most popular basketball arena get treated to such a show of utter dominance, and the crowd that seeped in before half-time looked and sounded noticably shocked when seeing the score-board.

Gasping, sighing, and talking among themselves, it was hard not to.

JCMK's biggest weakness was their comical inability to pass the ball, with SKS - who were playing a mean full-court press - fully exploiting this on the fast break. Read More… The Brunei Times

MSSSBD, the new champs

Saturday, June 18, 2011

image THE Youth Sports Festival (PSR) will crown new champions today.

Having collected 49 gold, 29 silver and 16 bronze medals as of Press time yesterday, the National Schools Sports Council (MSSSBD) virtually have the title in the bag with only chess to be contested today.

Belait are in second with 23 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze medals while defending champions Brunei-Muara are in third with their medal haul of 22 gold, 32 silver and 33 bronze medals.

Belait collected one of their gold medals yesterday through basketball. Yeo Chun Kiat turned up the heat late in the game to lift Belait to the basketball title with a 90-85 overtime victory over Brunei-Muara at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat last night.

The basketball gold could very well help them stick to the runners-up spot at the end of the June 11-18 tournament.

Yeo finished with a total of 13 points with 11 of those coming in the last 10 minutes of the game to erase a 13-point deficit at the beginning of the fourth period.

"I just tried to be more aggressive as I would have to cover both (Liew Ming Yang and Lim Liang Wei) after they fouled out. Got to box out better and we just gave it our best shot at winning," said Yeo, the forward of Belait, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph. Read More…

SKS survive D'Babes test

Friday, June 17, 2011

Ben Sim (L) of SKS going for a layup against D'Babes' Mark Del Mundo during yesterday's Inter-Company Basketball Tournament's second round match.Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong A BATTLE between two unbeaten teams in the Group A of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament's second round turned out to be the most competitive game thus far.

The hot hands of Cesar Asaldo lifted tournament favourites SKS to a hard-fought 86-78 victory over D'Babes (ABMS S/B) last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Asaldo sank seven treys for a team-high of 31 points to pace SKS and Ben Sim had a solid performance notching 20 points. Rio Oblido also added 11 points in the triumph.

Alnajer Daris tried his best for a game-high 33 points to pace D'Babes. Mark Del Mundo contributed 16 points and Edward Mendez chipped in another 14 points in the losing effort.

On paper, spectators were probably thinking how D'Babes are going to pull off a win with only seven cagers on their roster.

But backed by a largely pro D'Babes crowd, the opening period was tight, with D'Babes facing only a 17-22 deficit heading into the second quarter. Read More… The Brunei Times

Basketball: SKS leave HSBC in the red

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Yong Kui Seng (C) of HSBC goes for a layup against SKS in their second round Group A match of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament in Batu Bersurat last night. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong TOURNAMENT favourites SKS (Syarikat Kejuruteraan Sistematik S/B) stuck to the winning ways with a 99-52 thrashing of HSBC last night in Group A of the second round of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat.

In what was their fourth consecutive win in the tournament, SKS were on another level compared to their opponents and the battle was already lost before tip off for HSBC, who only had six players dressed for the match.

In contrast, SKS, who are a Belait-based team, had all their cagers in attendance.

With distributed scoring, four players notched double figures for SKS in the lopsided victory. Rio Oblido topscored for the team with 16 points and Ronald Arabia added 15 points.

Cesar Asaldo scored 14 points and Ben Sim poured in 12 points in the victory.

On the other hand, Yong Kui Seng carried much of the load on the offensive end for HSBC with a game-high of 22 points and Lim Chiao Leong chipped in 11 points in a losing effort.

SKS came out storming and were relentless on the attack. With better bench depth and size advantage, they were dominant in every way to get ahead 29-10 going into the second period.

It remained one-way traffic throughout the match with HSBC unable to put a fight against their tougher opponents. Yong was trying his best by driving to the hoop and drawing fouls to score for HSBC, but it never threatened SKS in any way. Read More…

Welflex flex their muscles

Monday, June 13, 2011

Ferdie Mercado (L) of Fratini's goes for a shot against Alex Caling of Muara Gas in their FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong THE fans came to the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat expecting a good game between Welflex Engineering and Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) in the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Tournament yesterday.

But they didn't get their money's worth when Welflex Engineering ran away with the game, beating their understrength opponents 78-64.

Elvin Requintin topscored for Welflex with 17 points and Don Mordeno added 14 while Marjomar Aying and Danny Felicilda each had 11 points in the win.

On the other hand, Jeff Paraiso had a game-high of 20 points to pace CESK and Geve Leones added 19 points.

Noel Grafil also hit double figures, firing four treys for a total of 14 points in a losing effort.

According to Mordeno, the point guard of Welflex, they won the match because their opponents were missing their big men Erwin Velez and Efren Espiritu in the lineup.

That gave Welflex the advantage on the inside and also in terms of speed to convert in transition.

Despite leading from start to finish, it was a close game in the first half but the lead ballooned to as big as 21 in the third stanza before Welflex ran away with a win. Read More…

Belait the early leaders

Jon Lee (R) of Brunei-Muara goes for a layup against Tutong in their PSR match in Batu Bersurat yesterday. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong THE first medals of the National Youth Sports Festival (PSR) were handed out yesterday and it was Belait who were sitting pretty at top the medals table with their haul of seven gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

The Belait team drew first blood by winning the first gold medal of this year's PSR defeating MSSSBD 22-19 in the final of the Rugby 7s competition at the Balapan Track and Field in Berakas.

D'Babes run riot, again

Sunday, June 12, 2011

Alnajer Daris (L) of D'Babes goes for a lay-up against Malar Setia in Group E of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament in Batu Bersurat last night. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong THERE was a shooting clinic at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat last night. At least that was what it looked like in the matchup between D'Babes (ABMS S/B) and Malar Setia for the final first round game of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament.

D'Babes broke the century mark for their third straight win in Group E with a 146-39 massacre of their opponents last night after connecting on 17 treys in the game.

With a roster of only seven players, six of them hit double figures with Alnajer Daris pouring in a game-high 39 points and Edward Mendez scoring 35. Roger Galvadores had 29 points and Mark Del Mundo added 17 while Lito Gacelo and Edmund Mendez chipped in 12 and 10 respectively in the win.

Both Stanley Kuan and Goh Waei Liang had 14 points for Malar Setia.

Right from the tip off Malar Setia looked lost without their key player Erwin Velez and they were overpowered in every department.

D'Babes were easily picking up steals and scoring in transition. Malar Setia were not playing any defence at all and it was 31-11 heading into the second quarter.

D'Babes continued to rule the court and it was 66-22 at halftime.

It was then showboating time with D'Babes only shooting from behind the arc to cruise to the most lopsided victory in the tournament thus far.

D'Babes are averaging a winning margin of over 67 points after last night. Their other group matches saw them thrash NBT 118-68 last Thursday and demolish Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) 107-62 on Monday.

In the earlier game, Hyatt defeated JCMK (QAF S/B) 62-54 in Group D.

SCB won 62-54.Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong NATIONAL cager Cavan Kong produced a 36-point performance to lift Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) to a 62-54 victory over NBT in Group E of the Inter-Company Basketball Tournament last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

However, it was NBT who had the last laugh as SCB needed at least a 13-point winning margin to make it to the next round.

Besides Kong, Paul Wong was the only other player to hit double figures for SCB with 15 points.

Armando Estoesta and Romeo each had 13 points to pace NBT in the loss.

NBT got off to a slow start and had plenty of difficulty knocking down their shots. In contrast, Kong got into rhythm early for nine first quarter points to put SCB ahead 21-12 heading into the second period.

It was a different affair in the second quarter with NBT switching to a box-one defence on Kong.

NBT held SCB to only nine points in the period to cut their deficit to just 30-29 at halftime. Read More…
