Barracudas back at office

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

THE Barracudas were back in full swing yesterday with all players on their roster attending a training session at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

It was their first training session after the 70-56 loss to the Philippine Patriots in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila on Dec 21.

Brunei's first professional basketball team are now in fifth place in the six-team ABL standings holding identical 4-6 win-loss record as the KL Dragons and fighting for a slot in the playoffs. Only the top four teams advance to the playoffs which will start on Jan 30.

Francis "Kiko" Adriano, the captain of the Barracudas, feels that the team could have been in a better position in the standings.

"The previous match (against the Patriots) was a must win game. Victory in Manila would definitely be a major boost for the team," said Adriano in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"Victory would also place us in fourth tied with the Thailand Tigers but we are dealing with it and putting the loss behind us," added Adriano.

On what needed to be improved, the 34-year-old Filipino said: "There's always room for improvement, but most importantly we just have to make sure that everyone is not complacent after the break. We will just have to keep practicing and try to win the rest of our games for a run to the playoffs." Read More...

Nothing is impossible to Jamri

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, December 28, 2009

Md Jamri Ramlee IN this football-crazed country, basketball is usually not the first choice for many Malays. But Md Jamri Ramlee proved that Malays too can play ball after leading Easyway Delima to the Under-18 crown of the Basketball Youth Cup on Saturday when they beat favourites HHY 70-62 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

"I've always loved taking the road less travelled. Plus, there are too many good football players in the country making it difficult to get to the top," said Md Jamri in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"Basketball is not much of a Malay sport in Brunei and I feel I have to prove a point that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. It's like when there's a will, there's a way," said the forward.

The 18-year-old Bandar native was also part of the Easyway Bunut line up that won third place in the Under-23 category.

On what makes a good player, Jamri replied: "For me attitude is the most important thing a player needs to take care of and improve on.

"A player must have good discipline especially when it comes to training and punctuality. He too must be humble enough to take advice from the other players and coaches," added Jamri.

"Being humble on court will not only make you a better player but will also allow you to make new friends," continued the 18-year-old cager.

Jamri is also part of Brunei's first professional basketball team, the Barracudas. The forward is with the reserve team and idolises Barracudas captain, Francis 'Kiko' Adriano, making the 34-year-old Filipino his role model.

"He is the hardest working basketball player I have met," said Jamri.

In addition, Jamri also looks up to his friend and 2009 national cager Soon Kian Leong. Read More…

HHY had a bad day and lost the crown

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, December 28, 2009

'TIS the season for giving but it is highly doubtful that was what HHY had in mind when they gifted Easyway Delima the championship match 70-62 on Saturday in the Under-18 category of the Basketball Youth Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

"I didn't think that our opponents played that well, but I thought that we threw the game away and gifted them the crown," said Denis Chee, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the defeat.

"We just played with no teamwork and we weren't in form for the match as most of the players had had too many games to play," added the captain of HHY.

The core players of the team were part of the Seri Bangar Temburong side, who took fourth place in the Under-23 category.

HHY went into the championship match as the favourites to lift the trophy. They had after all beaten the same opponents in the second round with a 77-69 triumph on Dec 19.

They were banking on their forward, Foo Gwen Tong, to lift them to victory after his 29-point performance in the first encounter.

Foo managed to topscore for his team on Saturday, contributing 16 points, but it was not enough to prevent HHY from falling to their only defeat of the competition. Read More…

Easyway's best just not good enough

EASYWAY QLAP have nothing to complain about when they came in second best in the Under-23 category of the Basketball Youth Cup on Saturday.

The favourites, White Haven, were just too strong defeating Easyway Qlap 94-75 in the final on Saturday at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

"We had the chance of winning the game but our opponents were just too strong," said Choo Yung Jian, the captain of Easyway Qlap, in an interview with The Brunei Times after Saturday's loss.

"As a team they played better than us in every way. Their players all stepped it up to win the match," added Choo.

The last time the two sides met, White Haven also came out on top 70-54 in the Belait District Basketball Association Under-23 tournament in October.

To make matters worse for the runners-up, they only had three substitutes for the final and Choo fouled out early in the fourth quarter, finishing with 15 points, after a good start with 10 points in the opening period. Read More…

White Haven in 7th heaven

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, December 27, 2009

IT was back to back championships for White Haven after they defeated Easyway Qlap 94-75 last night in the final of the Under-23 category of the Basketball Youth Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat.

Alvin Goh topscored for White Haven with 26 points and Josend Mangoroban contributed 24 points.

On the other hand, Lim Liang Wei had a game-high 30 points and Bong Shen chipped in 19 points in a losing effort.

White Haven started off with none of their Filipino players while Easyway Qlap got off to a quick start that resulted in an early 11-6 lead midway through the period.

Goh and Tony Bong, who scored 13 and eight points respectively for the opening quarter, were up to the task bringing White Haven back from the deficit and eventually grabbing the lead at 23-21 going into the second quarter.

Majomar Aying, who scored 14 of his 18 points in the second period, then caught fire draining his three-pointers and was penetrating to the hoop with his quick dribbling.

In contrast, Easyway Qlap were making unforced errors, turning the ball over to their opponents, who ran on fastbreaks to open up a double-digit advantage at 48-35 at halftime.

White Haven dominated the boards for much of the game but Easyway Qlap were not going down without a fight eventhough they remained down 46-54 midway through the period.

Easyway Qlap's Bong caught fire, scoring eight straight points, as he delivered from three-point range to lead an 11-2 run bringing the score to 59-61 with a minute to go in the third quarter.

However, White Haven regrouped and capped off a 6-0 run to end the period to remain in the driving seat at 67-59 heading into the final stanza.

The comeback for Easyway Qlap was made tougher when their captain, Choo Yung Jian, fouled out after a minute in the final period.

White Haven were pretty much in control before Easyway Qlap staged another run bringing the scores to 70-75 midway through the quarter.

However, with only three substitutes for the game, exhaustion crept in for Easyway Qlap allowing White Haven to cruise to the title.
"I would say that it was our teamwork that helped us win the game. The local players on the team also stepped up to match our opponents. That was key in the match," said Kenny Ching. the assistant coach of White Haven, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the championship match.

"But I do know that the players can put up an even better performance. However, I'm still satisfied with the win," added Ching.

EASYWAY DELIMA are seeking revenge against HHY in the championship match of the Under-18 category of the Basketball Youth Cup when the two sides meet at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat tomorrow.

HHY had handed Easyway Delima their only defeat in the tournament with a 77-69 triumph in the second round last Saturday.

"We definitely have revenge on our minds. It's going to be a different ball game as we only had eight players in our previous meeting and this time we will only be missing one player (Han Ming Kwang)," said Khoo Chin Kai, the captain of Easyway Delima, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"He may be one of our main players in the centre position but the rest of the players on the team are capable of being the main men for the match as we're well balanced," added Khoo.

Easyway Delima will also welcome back Jamri Ramlee to the line up after he suffered an ankle injury in the loss but still managed to lead his team with 19 points last time out.

Asked whether exhaustion played a part in their defeat the last time out since they had to play two days straight, Khoo replied: "It could be one of the reasons, but we will not use that as an excuse as our opponents played better. We had nothing going at both ends of the court and that was why we lost." Read More…

WHAT better way to usher in the new year than come up with something new. Kevin Reece, the new national basketball coach, just got here but he's already cooking up something big.

The American is ready for the challenge of changing the face of Brunei basketball after being appointed the national team coach two days ago.
Coach Kevin Reece (left) withBBA officials.
The seat has been left vacant for too long the previous coach, Bennett Palad of the Philippines, left one and a half years ago and Reece a.k.a Coach K wants to start his job by developing the sport from the grassroots.

"The priority that I have set for the job here is that I want to help and assist as much as possible to change the face of Brunei basketball. This is going to take a lot of patience but we will have to move in a positive direction.

"I believe that with the administration here (Brunei Basketball Association and Brunei government), who have the same vision as me, we will be able to pull it off," said Reece in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"What I want to do is put in a structure, a successful one, that starts from the grassroots (children aged between five and 18) or even deeper than that," added Reece, who has been coaching basketball professionally since 1985

"What is needed for the future of the sport here is for the players to lose the old (attitude) and go with the new.

"They will develop but they will need to be patient and eventually they will see the results of them improving," continued the 39-year-old Los Angeles native. Read More…

What Larry wants for Xmas ...

Thursday, December 24, 2009

ALL Reggie Larry wants for Christmas is a happy new year for the Barracudas when they continue on their mission for a playoff berth in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) next year.
Brunei's first professional basketball team may not have gotten their early Christmas present with a 56-70 defeat at the hands of table toppers and favourites, Philippine Patriots, last Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila, but they are ready to move ahead and concentrate on making the playoffs when the league continues next year.

"The plan is to forget it (the defeat). It's a new year and we need to remind ourselves that we are trying to make the playoffs," said Larry, one of Barracudas' American import, in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"We know that the next couple of games are crucial and we will need to win them to get a chance at making it into the playoffs," added Larry.

The inaugural league continues with the Thailand Tigers hosting the Barracudas at the Nimibutr Indoor Stadium in Bangkok on Jan 4.

The 6ft 6in American believes that the team will be ready and up to the task for their third encounter with the Thai side.

"We will get better. We just need to stay in shape and not get into foul trouble. But we are getting better as a team," said the former Boise State player.

"We cannot afford to lose anymore home games and I believe we might be able to steal a few games away from home as well," added Larry, who is leading the league in points (21.0 points per game) and assists (4.0 assists per game). Read More...

Thursday, December 24, 2009

THE wait is finally over. Kevin Reece was yesterday confirmed as the new national basketball coach.

The Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) made the announcement yesterday.

Slingers star wins his wowan

Thursday, December 24, 2009

HE played, he won and then went down on bended knee.

Singapore Slingers forward/ centre Pathman Matialakan had a memorable day on Dec 17.

First the Slingers ended their three-game skid with a 69-66 victory over the Thailand Tigers in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

Then it was time for a reality show. Pathman got down on one knee at centre court and proposed to his long time girlfiend, Li Ling, who happily accepted before he slipped on the ring and kissed her in front of a cheering crowd.

Not wanting the usual romantic dinner type proposal, Pathman had thought hard on how to make his proposal memorable.

It then occurred to him that since both Li and himself are professional athletes, there was no better way than to propose after a match.

"Because I am a professional basketball player with the Singapore Slingers and I wanted my family and friends to witness it, and not forgetting our fans.

"A dinner would be too predictable and not much of a surprise element," Pathman told the ABL website.

Li, who has lived in Singapore for over 10 years, is part of the Singapore national netball team and has known Pathman for a long time. Read More...

'National coach' has landed

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

THE national basketball team may finally get their coach now.

Kevin Reece, better known as Coach K, the man chosen to lead the national cagers is in town to meet the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) officers today.

The national basketball team have been without a coach since Filipino coach, Bennett Palad, left almost two years ago.

Tony Tan has been temporarily coaching the side, but it seems the wait is finally over for Esmond Tan and his teammates.

Reece visited the Sultanate in September and found plenty of potential for the sport in the country.

The ex-Bintulu coach found out about the vacancy when he brought the Bintulu National Basketball League (NBL) team to the Sultanate for friendly games.

"I'm looking forward to coming to Brunei because of my preference for the easy and less stressful way of living.

"Brunei is a place I can be at peace with my family and myself, appreciate the culture and enjoy what I love to do, teach the kids the game of basketball and have a great deal of fun along the way," said the 49-year-old Reece during a brief interview with The Brunei Times in Batu Bersurat yesterday. Patriots vs Barracudas: Filipinos return home as 'Philippine foes'

WITH four days left until Christmas Brunei Barracudas' Philippine contingent are back in Manila but as Public Enemies No 1.

The Barracudas' three Filipino imports and their head coach Bong Ramos are in the Philippines for another battle against the Philippine Patriots today in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila.

Ramos came up with the right formula to conjure up a vital victory in their playoff run last Sunday beating ABL favourites and table-toppers, the Patriots, 95-70 at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas to halt the Filipinos' six-game winning streak and hand them only their second defeat of the season. (The only other team to have beaten the Patriots are the Singapore Slingers).

In what was a mission impossible turned mission accomplished, the Barracudas' Filipino imports Leo Avenido and Don Camaso each poured in 18 points while captain Francis 'Kiko' Adriano chipped in 13 points for an all-round winning performance last Sunday.

They face another tough assignment today slay the Patriots in their own backyard. The game is a rescheduled match which was supposed to be held on Oct 31 but had to be called off due to typhoon Santi.

"They managed to bounce back against the KL Dragons in a closely contested match last week. They have a good line-up and we will have to match their intensity and energy in Monday's match," said Ramos, the Barracudas head coach, in an interview with The Brunei Times.

"We have to be ready for this game ... we know they really want to get back at us after the defeat (in Brunei)," added Ramos.

The Patriots are coming off a hard fought 76-70 triumph over the KL Dragons at home on Saturday.

RP Patriots eye revenge vs Barracudas

The Philippine Patriots hope to erase the stigma of their crushing defeat the last time when they clash with the Brunei Barracudas for the second time in eight days Monday in the ASEAN Basketball League at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

In what could be the biggest upset in the six-nation league, the Barracudas snapped the Patriots' six-game winning streak with a masterful 95-70 victory last week in Bandar Seri Begawan to boost their bid for the semifinals.

Brunei import Mike Pilgrim was so ecstatic that he even called the improbable victory in the local newspaper Brunei Times as "the mother of all victories".

But the RP Patriots coach Louie Alas shrugged it off.

"Maybe it's true because we were never expected to lose that big," said Alas. "But we will try to play as hard as we can to beat them."

The Patriots are coming off a hard-fought 76-70 win over the KL Dragons last Saturday that saw American import Brandon Powell breaking out of his offensive slump with 20 points, 13 of which came in the first half.

Powell was a huge disappointment against the Barracudas, making just three points before breathing fire against the Dragons.

"I told him to redeem himself because he's an import and he should forget about his age and be matured," Alas said of the 22-year-old Powell. "But I hope he would continue his impressive play."

The Patriots will also rely on 6-foot-10 American import Jason Dixon, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double, along with locals Jaypee Alcaraz, Warren Ybanez, Froilan Baguion and Nonoy Baclao.

The Barracudas, mentored by Filipino coach Bong Ramos, are expected to once again tap the services of Pilgrim, fellow American reinforcement Reggie Larry and Filipino cagers Leo Avenido, Don Camaso and Kiko Adriano.

Monday’s game was supposed to be held last Oct. 31 but was postponed because of Typhoon Santi.

D’ CAFÉ LEADS THE SERIES 1-0: Kiarong Cup 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

Kiarong, BSB. Game started last night with Turistas playing early of the first half with only two (2) players. According to the tournament’s rule, game may start or continue provided that, a team should have at least an in-bounder and a receiver. Abiding this rule the committees and players started the game. Before the middle of the half, Turistas finally got their complete line up but despite the lack of a player in the early start they managed to finish the half with the score tied at 37. Axel Mangga of Turistas lead his team in the first half gathering 26 pts. “I don’t want the team to go behind a big margin against them. I just want to give them the game that everybody was expecting. We reached this championship games and for sure we will finish this with us on top”, he expressed during the half time.
With the unexpected performance of Turistas, D’ Café was stunned. Though they are playing with the complete line up, they cannot simple take a huge lead. “We underestimate their incomplete line-up and for sure we will take it seriously in the next half”, Alex Barawed uttered, who only made 11 pts in the first half.

In the beginning of the second half, both teams wanted to establish a commanding lead. Nobody wanted to give up. With no alternate players, exhausted Turistas slowly went behind shot by shot as the D’ Café’s Rj Buenaventura started to pour three pointers and perimeter shots. Even the Chinese player Andrew Jong made a huge 3 point to add more excitement to the game. With the D’ Café’s commanding lead of 22 points before reaching the final 4 minutes of the last half, they still continue their line of defense. Continental Cup: International Youth Basketball Tournament

Hey Hoops Fans out there in Brunei Darussalam! Recently, I got an email from Mario Nishihara the Event Coordinator of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. I'm posting an excerpt of his email and I thought you guys might be interested to join.

More about the annual event below:

The Continental Cup is an international youth basketball tournament that will be held in Cleveland, Ohio July 1-4, 2010.  I would personally like to extend this as an invitation to have your athletes participate as they represent their city, region, team or even their countries!

The age groups are: U12, U14, U16 & U18 boy’s and girl’s teams from all around the world to participate in four (4) days of competition.  With Olympic-style Opening Ceremonies, Feature Games, a Rock ‘N Roll Dance Party and Continental Cup Excursion Packages, this will be a great learning opportunity on and off the court.  Although the world has started to shrink, young athletes rarely get to experience a unique tournament like this where the away team is from the United States and the home team is from China. We would like the younger and non-elite athletes to also be part of an Olympic experience – and this is a great chance to let them!

For further tournament and pricing details, please refer to the attached Tournament Information Packet and/or visit the tournament website: www.continentalcupbasketball.com. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the 2010 Continental Cup, please contact Mario Nishihara at +1.216.363.1713, or via email at mnishihara@clevelandsports.org.

Ramos: Don't think about playoffs yet

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

BONG RAMOS insists that his players should keep their feet on the ground after beating Asean Basketball League (ABL) favourites Philippine Patriots on Sunday.
Barracudas Head Coach Bong RamosThe Brunei Barracudas beat the Patriots 95-70 at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas to pick up their first back-to-back win in the league, and they now sit fourth in the six-team table.

Many emphasised that the victory was the first for a team from Brunei over a team from the Philippines in basketball, and the Barracudas' owner, Nadzaty Azma Azeez, was even quoted on the ABL website as saying that the win puts them in the race for the playoffs.

But despite all the back-patting surrounding the victory, the head coach is adamant that his players should continue to take one game at a time and not just think about making the playoffs.

The Barracudas have six games left and only the best four teams in the league will continue their season after that.

"The Patriots are still the strongest team in the league, I feel we were in the right place at the right time," said Ramos yesterday. Read More…

RP Patriots seek No. 7 vs Brunei 5

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Patriots, out to claim the No. 1 seed in the Final Four, go for their seventh straight win as they tangle with the Brunei Barracudas today in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) at the Brunei Indoor Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

This marks the first time that the Patriots
and the Barracudas will face each other after their scheduled game last October was cancelled due to typhoon “Ondoy”.

The Patriots, co-owned by Harbour Centre CEO and president Mikee Romero and businessman Tonyboy Cojuangco, have won their last six games, capped by their 81-69 rout of Indonesia’s Satria Muda BritAma for a 7-1 slate.

Brunei is in the cellar with a 3-5 record, but the RP Patriots coach Louie Alas remains wary of the host team.

For one, the Barracudas are coming off an impressive 80-63 win over the Kuala Lumpur Dragons last Wednesday, also in Brunei.

“That, for sure, will give them the extra boost when they face us,” said Alas. “So we have to play hard.”

The Patriots will also miss the services of Nonoy Baclao of Ateneo and Elmer Espiritu with the former honoring a previous commitment to play for Ateneo in the Philippine Collegiate Champions Lague (PCCL) finals against FEU today.

Espiritu, on the other hand, is nursing a broken cheek bone.

But the Patriots remain formidable with imports Jason Dixon and Brandon Powell and Rob Wainwright, Val Acuna, Froilan Bagion, JP Alcaraz and Erwin Sta. Maria in the fold.

Wednesday night fever

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday, December 11, 2009

Mike Pilgrim (13) MIKE PILGRIM was under the weather on Wednesday. But not even a fever could stop him from putting on one of his best performances for the Barracudas in their 80-63 victory over the KL Dragons on Wednesday night in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Pilgrim poured in 20 points and hauled down 15 rebounds for a double-double in his third game playing in the centre position after the departure of compatriot, seven-footer Lonnie Jones.

"I had to fight a light fever so I got dehydrated a lot, but I wanted to win more than anything else. So I just didn't think about the sickness and just played my game," said Pilgrim in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

However, the 25-year-old American didn't think it was a one-man performance but felt that it was the team's great teamwork and chemistry that allowed them to surge in the fourth quarter to pick up their third win in the ABL taking them off the basement of the six-team table.

"We played as a unit and we dug deep to keep ourselves focus. We were hungry after our two-week lay off without any games and our head coach, Bong Ramos, really prepared us well for the game," said the 6ft 9in American. Read More…
