BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, August 31, 2009

Team SummerStar - 2009 BYBC U18 Champs A STRONG move to the basket by Yeo Chun Kiat to score with less than 20 seconds left in the game helped Summerstars complete a comeback to defeat 88 Trading Company 65-63 in the final at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria last night and be crowned champions of the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship Under-18 tournament.

Captain Yeo and Kho Zhe Hou each contributed 19 points for Summerstars. On the other hand, Foo Gwen Tong and Chen Wee Nien each poured in 17 points for a losing cause.

"I dont think we played as well tonight (Sunday) but I thought it was our teamwork that won us the game despite not having any practice sessions prior to the tournament," said Yeo.

"I guess it was our hardwork and our supporters that helped us to victory," added the captain.

88 Trading Company started out the better of the two as they were playing defence, closing out the cutting lanes and double teaming when needed. They were also quick in the fastbreaks department and these factors helped them to carry an 18-11 lead into the second quarter. Read More…

Can 88 Trading Co dim Summerstars in final?

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

BYBC U18 IT WAS an awesome night for 88 Trading Company, who outplayed Awesome 76-71 in the semi-finals of the Youth Basketball Championship (BYBC) Under-18 tournament to book themselves a final date with Summerstars.

Wong Ha Shiong led 88 Trading Co with 25 points while Hung Jiunn Nan, Wong's Maktab Duli teammate, top scored for Awesome with 24 points in the first semi-final at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria yesterday.

Awesome started off sluggishly while 88 Trading Co came out brightly firing off all cylinders. Awesome were making too many turnovers and their poor defence led to 88 Trading Co opening a 28-12 lead going into the second period. 88 Trading Co were relying on their fastbreak points and good perimeter shooting to extend their lead.  Aii Sdn Bhd cruise into semis

BELAIT

Saturday, August 29, 2009

AII SDN BHD cruised to a 72-35 victory over Blackjack in a lopsided quarter-final of the Brunei Youths Basketball Championship (BYBC) at Seria's New Village basketball court yesterday.

Aii Sdn Bhd's Choo Yung Kang and Lim Yi Chen had 13 and 12 points respectively to lead a balanced attack against their opponents, who looked lost during the game.

Blackjack's Nicholas Boey led his team with 12 points.

Blackjack only managed to score 10 points in the first half of the game as they were outplayed by the faster and stronger Aii.

With the quarter-final win, Aii advance to the semi-finals tonight where they will meet Summerstars, who edged their opponents MGL 85-59 in yesterday's early match.

The other semi-final will feature 88 Trading Company and Awesome.

The BYBC, the country's Under-18 competition, ends tomorrow. The tournament will be followed by the opening of another championship for player aged 21 and above. (GDN1)

Seria KAMPUNG BARU SERIA -

Finally, quarterfinals of the BYBC U18 tournament are upon us. After an intense week of intense hooping and hassling, 9 teams divided in two groups comprising of youths from all over the country were eliminated to 8. The 8 teams will battle in elimination to fight for a place in semi finals and with all eyes are fixed on the championship.

27th August 2008

1st quarterfinals

Teams: Sing Hup Huat vs 88 Trading Co.

Post game review #1:

In an all Bandar team showdown, it was 88 Trading that emerged victorious with a blowout score line of 90 to 41. 88 Trading never looked back from tip off. They dominated from start to finish with points coming mainly from easy fast break uncontested layups.

Both teams attempted driving penetrative style of play but the 88 Trading defense stood strong grabbing defensive boards and hitting team SHH on the counter attack. Team SHH should have capitalized on the height advantage they had in Kee Vern Hong (no.5) and Tony Bong (no.15) instead of penetrative basketball from the guards leaving the backcourt totally exposed.

Note: Quarter final games were to be played in 4 quarters of ten minutes. However, due to technical reasons, the first quarter final game had to be played in 2 halves of 20 minutes.

Scores by periods:

SHH 19, 41

88 Trading 49, 90 (final)

2nd quarterfinals

Teams: Flying Fish vs Awesome

Post game review #2:

This was a fairytale game where some might agree the game ended in the saying ‘so close, but yet so far’. In this case, this was story for the determined, team spirited, hardworking and athletic team from Tutong, the Flying Fish. When the game ended, it was team Awesome who picked up the goodies with a 5 point victory (62 – 57).

Team Awesome won the game because:

Inside presence. They had players of bigger physique collecting offensive and defensive boards not allowing second chance points to opponents.

Team play. Team Awesome was a tactically more organized with players available in high and low post during offense.

Despite never putting their nose in the lead, the audience admired the ‘never give up’ attitude shown by the Flying Fish. They came out striking at the start of third period in a 10-1 run which saw them tie the game at 30 a piece. Facing that, team Awesome quickly called a timeout to regroup and the momentum from Flying Fish was made redundant. Late in the fourth period, the Flying Fish applied full court press with four minutes left in the game. They managed to cut the 11 point deficit to as low as 4. It makes you ponder what if they had applied full court press for the entire fourth period causing long balls to be intercepted and opponents to lose possession. I guess, the story of maybes?

Scores by periods:

Flying Fish 9, 20, 30, 57

Awesome 16, 29, 47, 62 (final)

Aying Leones

R. BinasLinktech come up short of upsetting Babe’s Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency. A full-packed crowd witnessed last night’s showdown between two of the best team in the tourney. Linktech who led by as many as eight points at the end of first half saw Babe’s Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency rally and grab a 68-61 lead on a back-to-back baskets by Don Dadis and a defense-less under goal stab by Roy Binas in the end of 3rd period.

Labatigan This is it! this is it! In the 4th period saw a different Babe’s Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency on the floor, doubling the exhausted GV Leones every time he got the ball possession and forced him to commit turnovers. Of course, the reason Babe’s Boutique’s “D” was such a huge factor was because their key players bought into it. Both Roy Binas a known defender and M. Aying was superb in stopping Leones in the late rounds. Roy Binas played big not only on the defensive end but also knocking down crucial free throws in the end. M. Aying, D. Mordeno, R. Binas combined for 72 points, 27, 26 and 19 a piece. Linktech’s workhorse Leones led his team with 30 points followed by E. Requintin’s 23.
Guest of Honours (photo above: Guest of Honours of the evening Pg Sabri Pg Hj Mohammad the Deputy Director of the Department of Youth and Sports, Mr Alexander B Yano, the Ambassador of the Philippines to Brunei Darussalam and members of the Brunei Basketball Association.)

I wasn’t surprised at all, We all know Linktech’s starters are strong and better but Babe’s Boutiques/Lim & Ho Employment Agency has the better reserves and reinforcements. Yes, i mean they got deeper bench than Linktech.

In the battle for third place, Yuan Tong Enterprise (YTE) edged Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) Pinoy Resources 80-76. YTE was leading by the end of 1st half but ESK made a comeback in the 4th period but fell short.

GV Leones ignites Linktech's 102-100 win over YTE in overtime. Soaring for rebounds and acrobatic layups, GV "The Ironman" Leones stuffed YTE in the closing minutes of the regulation and in OT. Both teams played a strong, exciting game, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

Late in overtime, It was Linktech's 'D' thats proves once again that'll win games. Shutting down YTE's Go-to-Guy Esmond, He is doubled and even tripled whenever he drives to the paint. Also Linktech knocked down their free throws but YTE couldn't. It's the free throws, the free throws! How many times did your coach tell to practice those free throws?

Leones scored 54 points and backed by Elvin Requintin's 19. YTE's Esmond Tan had 39 points and Benjamin Lim added 17. Linktech's win will trip them to the finals later in the showdown against Babe's Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency who demolished Eng Seng Keo/Pinoy Resources last night.

Coaches The wait is over, The Final Four is here and it'll start tonight: Which team will trip to the finals tomorrow? Both winners tonight will meet for Sunday’s

championship game. Losers will battle for third place.

7:00pm - Linktech vs Yuan Tong Enterprise (YTE)

Leones Both teams met in the first day of the tourney. YTE lost to Linktech in a very close game decided by a pair of charities, 77-76. This time will Linktech rely again in their 1-3-1 defense? Can YTE break the full court press? Will their long range bombs consistent enough all night long? What major adjustments did Tony Tan made this time after their first encounter? Will GV Leones and Esmond Tan drop again another 20+ points this time?

Esmond "YTE is going to bring a different level of intensity tonight," Linktech head coach Lito Porlahe said. "I believe Tony has made several adjustments for his team on both ends of the floor for us.", "This time around I'll keep my players on their toes and nobody is allowed to relax," He added. In their first meeting, Linktech enjoyed the front seat with a 15-point advantage in the last period but Esmond Tan did all he could to keep YTE in the game, he spearheaded the offense with 21 points against GV's 16 and put them on top 76-75 with 20 seconds to go after his and 1 basket. If YTE can keep the game close, I can see that they have a bigger chance of winning.

8:30pm - Eng Seng Keo/Pinoy Resources vs Babe's Boutique

This two teams haven't met yet. Both of them has two different game style and both has the deepest bench in their roster:

Babe's Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency will try to outrun Eng Seng Keo with their up-tempo game but ESK will try to slow it down, control the tempo and use it's height and size to their advantage. I'll expect ESK to control the boards but Babe's Boutique/Lim & Ho Employment Agency are far more aggressive for offensive rebounds. If ESK can neutralize the opponents transition game, they have a chance of winning.

The Rockettes has all the pieces to be a contender of the group, the team displays promising talent and sharp shooting skills but lacks defensively, specially in shaded area. I love watching this team play, you'll see a lot of swaggers :) The team is giving away too many easy and uncontested shots. It's time now to bring in those players from the bench who can play D's, a lot of D's. Congrats to Ismakom, did play teamwork with proper ball execution even under pressure.
