2011 NBL Finals - MIRI Fire Horse burn Farmcochem to clinch first crown

Fri, 07/29/2011 - 14:12

A flurry of fouls cost them dearly as Perak Farmcochem lost 74-73 to Miri Fire Horse in the 2011 National Basketball League (NBL) finals.

Farmcochem shot themselves in the foot after conceding eight fouls in the first quarter alone, and had to see their main man Chris Kuete sit out most of the game with four fouls as Miri was virtually uncontested in their first appearance in the finals at the MABA Stadium.

However, the match was marred by several poor calls from the officials, who are having a hard time keeping the match in control as protests flew from both teams at every controversial whistle.

Anthony Johnson wasted no time getting into business from the tip-off, drawing four fouls from the Farmcochem camp including two from Chris Kuete to convert seven points from the free throw line. Miri's Chai Chze Hian sunk three consecutive three-pointers to open the gap, as Anthony contributed another from outside the perimetre for a 24-12 lead. Read More… Source: Malay-Basketball.com

Pressure began to cause a stir in Farmcochem, and disaster struck for them as starting forward Chris conceded his fourth foul and had to sit out the rest of the first quarter. The national basketball coach Kevin Reece told The Brunei Times that they have almost finalised the names on who shall be part of the elite.

The Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) had pre-selected players that started intensive training under the American last Monday.

After more than a week of assessments, the national coach knows who will be on the roster to compete at the 13th Borneo City Men's Basketball Invitational Tournament 2011 in Kota Kinabalu from August 4-7.

In addition, the selected players will compete at the upcoming 2011 Sultan's Cup which will tip off on July 23.

"Most of them will be from the core that have been training since the start of the programme. But there are also a couple of them who were already on the radar," said Reece in an interview when met yesterday during a training session at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat.

"However, we won't be able to get all the players that we want to play for both tournaments. It is a major blow for me but there is nothing we can do about it," he added. Read More… The Brunei Times

Defence was Welflex's final downfall

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Efren Espiritu (R) of CESK goes for a layup while Elvin Requintin of Welflex Engineering tries to block him in the final of the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open on Sunday. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong THEY came in as the favourites and could have left the court in celebratory mood, but their opponents had other plans.

Welflex Engineering were always in a good position to be crowned champions of the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat on Sunday.

But failure to adjust at the defensive end led to a 90-81 downfall to Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) in the final.

Welflex Engineering were clearly undersized and their 3-2 zone defence led to the duo of tournament MVP Geve Leones and Jeff Paraiso easily raking up points in the paint.

Despite getting off to a slow start to trail 20-11 heading into the second quarter, Welflex Engineering managed to pull up their socks to lead by as many as 10 points but stamina was an inevitable problem.

Their tired legs were exposed on Sunday and Welflex Engineering usually a run and gun style of team were outrun by CESK in the championship match. Their failure to get back on defence resulted in easy transition points. Read More… The Brunei Times

The Filipino was named the MVP of the final after he poured in 31 points to lead CESK to the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open crown after a 90-81 victory over Welflex Engineering.

But, having been drained out of his energy he was stopped in his tracks at the Kampung Baru basketball court in Seria in his second final of the day.

Leones had to settle for the silver after the depleted Black Cobra side fell 80-69 to Esmond Tan's Bukit Ladang in the final of the Brunei Open Basketball Championship 2011.

The lanky Filipino still managed to topscore for his team with 16 points despite fouling out midway through the fourth quarter but it was not enough for him to celebrate a second gold medal. The Brunei Times

Bukit Ladang out to kill Cobra in final

Sunday, July 10, 2011

IT went exactly as scripted.

Esmond Tan (L), the captain of Bukit Ladang, and his mates thrashed the Seria Hawks 106-77 in the semi-finals of the Brunei Open Basketball Championship 2011 last night. Picture: BT Defending champions Bukit Ladang cruised to the final of the Brunei Open Basketball Championship 2011 with a 106-77 thrashing of Seria Hawks in the semi-finals last night at the Kampung Baru basketball court in Seria.

They will face Black Cobra, who edged Batangas Double Blades 76-72 in the other semi-final, in the championship match.

Bukit Ladang came out storming cruising to a 32-20 lead heading into the second quarter.

However, Seria Hawks fought back strongly in the second period to close to within 46-42 at halftime.

The defending champions then picked up the slack and applied full court pressure defence that resulted in transition points. They outscored their opponents 32-17 in the third stanza and Seria Hawks were in no position to mount a comeback with the core of the roster plagued with foul trouble.

"We came out playing full court pressure defence that turned the game around in the third quarter. Our opponents crumbled under pressure and they committed turnovers which we converted into points on the break," said Esmond Tan, the captain of Bukit Ladang, in an interview with The Brunei Times, after the win. Will Leones be king?

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Geve Leones (L) of CESK goes for a layup against Arthur Bedes of SGTB in the semi-finals of the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat this week. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong FANS are in for a treat and it is bound to be a spectacular show. Those at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat today can expect a tightly contested game between Welflex Engineering and Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) in the final of the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open.

It is also one not to be missed considering the roster of players filling up both sides.

Welflex Engineering are looking more like the favourites to lift the trophy, having run away with a 78-64 victory in their first meeting in the round-robin stages last month.

Shrugging off a slow start, Welflex Engineering defeated Hua San Hardware 103-81 in the semi-finals on Thursday to move into the final.

On the other hand, CESK have shown a different side of their game which was more concentrated on defence that saw them cruise to an 88-69 win over Still Got the Bloes (SGTB) in the other semi-final.

Welflex Engineering have arguably the best lineup in the competition with the duo of Don Mordeno and Marjomar Aying in the backcourt. Read More… The Brunei Times

Leones, Mordeno ready for s-final battles

Geve Leones (R) of CESK grabs the rebound from Ryan Esteban (C) of SGTB in their FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open match last week at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/ Yee Chun Leong ONLY the strong will survive! They started out with seven teams but only four remain standing.

Fans mark your calendars because you will not want to miss the matches taking place at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat on Thursday.

The FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open heads into the semi-finals and first up will be a matchup between Chop Eng Seng Keo (CESK) and Still Got the Bloes (SGTB) at 8pm.

The second game pits tournament favourites Welflex Engineering against Hua San Hardware at 9.30pm.

In their encounter during the round-robin stage, CESK survived a late rally to triumph 70-64 over SGTB last Friday.

CESK will be banking on Geve Leones to deliver the goods, but he hasn't quite put up big numbers on the scoresheet thus far.

The reason is simple the team are featuring an all-star cast. Efren Espiritu, standing at 6ft 5in, is manning the centre position and teams have found it difficult to score in the paint whenever he is on the floor. Read More… The Brunei Times

CESK ensure SGTB 'still got the blues'

Friday, July 1, 2011

Efren Espiritu (L) of CESK dunks the ball against SGTB in the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Picture: BT/Yee Chun Leong CHOP Eng Seng Keo (CESK) survived a late rally to triumph 70-64 over Still Got the Bloes (SGTB) in the FAB-LBC Basketball Tournament OFW Open last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Noel Grafil topscored for CESK with 18 points and Efren Espiritu added 11 points in the victory. On the other hand, Vincent Superio had the game-high of 27 points to pace SGTB and Precildo Francisco added 18 points, with 16 of them coming in the first half, to a losing cause.

Using their height advantage, CESK were securing the boards allowing them to get second chance points. They were either scoring on the break or dropping the ball into the paint and muscling their way to the basket to score. SGTB were settling for too many outside shots which saw them trail 31-39 at halftime.

CESK finally broke away and extended their lead margin to as much as 18 points. SGTB were looking lost on offence rushing their shots resulting in empty possessions while CESK were sharing the ball and executing their offence brilliantly. Read More… The Brunei Times
