THE idea of setting up the Brunei Amateur Basketball League (BABL) has received plenty of positive response.

The Brunei Times reported on Tuesday that the BABL is in the works and is tentatively scheduled to begin in March next year.

The league, which is the first of its kind in the Sultanate, will be similar to the Asean Basketball League (ABL), and is open to any valid identity card holders in the country.

To spice things up and to make it more competitive, each team are allowed to field two international imports (without a valid Brunei IC), bounded by a contract.

Going one on one with Benjamin Sim

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

A: My family migrated to Vancouver, Canada, when I was seven years old and I started out playing football in a little league when I first got there. My mum would later show me how to play basketball since she was the athletic one in the family.

I also enjoy playing golf as well since I worked on a golf course there for a while.

I graduated with a diploma in fitness training back in 2003 and I found myself back in Brunei just about three years ago. I made some new friends in KB (Kuala Belait) who I would play ball together with. I eventually joined tournaments in Miri as well.

Q: How can you compare playing overseas and here?

A: I think it's just that the community is bigger outside. Read More…

'New look' but same ol' Barracudas

Pictures: BT/Yusri Adanan THE "new look" Brunei Barracudas are virtually out of contention for the Asean Basketball League play-offs after their 72-65 defeat to leaders the Thailand Slammers at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas last night.

As expected the Brunei team's 'new' local players Ahmad Termizi Hj Nordeen, Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili, Afif Khalidi and Jamri Ramlee, who played briefly in the final quarter had only a minor role in the match as the imports were again made to work for the team.

The four were recruited recently when the team's former local cagers quit en masse on Dec 13.

Chris Kuete led the scoring charts with 21 points to lift the Slammers to victory.

Teammate Jason Lamar Dixon bagged a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Attaporn Lertmalaiporn chipped in with 10 points. Read More…

Coaching is sharing

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

BROTHERHOOD is fellowship a fraternity or union united for a common purpose that comes with being members of a profession. We as coaches are also united by our career and we share information because this is what we do.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending an Asean Basketball League (ABL) game. The Singapore Slingers were in town to take on a local club side.

I was there to support the Singapore side and catch up with Slingers head coach Neo Beng Siang.

Neo and I have a great deal of history and both are considered pioneers of Singapore basketball. Our relationship goes back to the early 90s, to be exact 1991.

Neo was a gifted point guard who could play the game in its purest fashion. It didn't matter if he was small in stature, because his heart made up for his size.

Back in the 90s we had some classic head to head battles and, I could say this in all truth, I looked forward to seeing him play as well as playing against him. Read More…

'Wake up call for Team A'

Monday, December 20, 2010

Reece: Soon Lee/ Easyway B wanted the win more than Team A.

Soon Lee/ Easyway B's Lim Liang Wei goes for a shot against Soon Lee/ Easyway A defenders during Saturday's Open Category final of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat . Picture: BT/ Melvin Jong KEVIN REECE, the national basketball coach, believes that 2011 will be an exciting and promising year for the national cagers.

The American made the statement after watching his players, both on the national squad and in the training scheme, slugged it out in the final of the Open Category of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat on Saturday night.

But it was Soon Lee/ Easyway B that shocked their opponents after coming from behind to edge Team A 77-75 to take the crown.

"It is going to be very competitive next year. Everyone will have to give their best during training next year. This is definitely a wake up call for the veteran cagers," said Reece, in an interview with The Brunei Times, yesterday. Read More…

They show B is BEST Easyway B beat Team A to title

Sunday, December 19, 2010

IT'S not over until the fat lady sings.

While there was no fat lady singing yesterday, the saying could not be truer as it required last minute come-back wins by both Soon Lee/ Easyway B and Soon Lee/ Easyway (Under-18) to capture the crown for their respective categories.

Soon Lee/ Easyway B managed to prove to the country that they are no second team when they left it till the dying seconds of the match to secure a victory over their brother team Soon Lee/ Easyway A 77-75 in the final of the Open Category of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Meanwhile, Soon Lee/ Easyway completed a Soon Lee/ Easyway sweep of the tournament by going on a last minute charge to put away CHMS Bandar 76-72 in the Under-18 category of the tournament.

The game between the two Soon Lee/Easyways got off to a fast start but it was the B team who had the better shooting touch early on in the game, jumping to a 4-0 lead, courtesy of team captain Choo Yung Jian, who finished with a total of 18 points on the night. Read More…

Strong Eagles soar to third

Saturday, December 18, 2010

L&H Motor's Phang Seng Fu goes for a layup amidst three Strong Eagles defenders during their Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament, Open Category, semi-final match yesterday. Picture: BT/ Melvin Jong STRONG Eagles showed that they were indeed the best of the rest when they triumphed over L&H Motors 80-75 in an overtime thriller to claim the bronze in the Open Category of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

In the early match, Haska had an easier time in the semi-final of the Under-18 category by disposing of SPE 58-44.

L&H Motors had a crucial opportunity to put away the match, tied at 72 a-piece with approximately 20 seconds left in regulation, but a mental lapse resulted in them taking too much time off the clock to get a good shot off.

Strong Eagles would make them pay by capitalising on the missed opportunity thoroughly outplaying their opponents in every aspect of the game to snatch victory from their opponents.

Ho Hee Lee led the charge for Strong Eagles with 20 points while Goh Boon Tiong and Liu Kwang Shiong chipped in 16 and 10 respectively.

L&H Motor's Phang Seng Fu led all scorers with 21 points in the losing effort. Read More…

IT is ironic that Brunei's first "professional" basketball team should label their former local cagers who quit en masse on Monday as "unprofessional" when the team themselves did not even give the players any contract.

"We didn't sign any contract from the start (of the 2010) so by rights we can leave the team," the four local players Esmond Tan, Benjamin Lim, Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili and Lim Aik Hock said in a statement yesterday.

Tan, Benjamin, Hj Md Badri and Aik Hock, who were with the Barracudas from the start of the Asean Basketball League in 2009, told The Brunei Times on Wednesday that they quit the team after they were encouraged to do so and to provide opportunities to other local players who could help the team to make the playoffs this season.

However, Nadzaty Azma Azeez, the owner of the Barracudas, has branded the four as "a disappointment to the country" on Wednesday and later branded them as "unprofessional". Read More…

The Brunei Times' report on Tuesday quoting sources close to the Brunei Barracudas as saying that all four local cagers had quit the team.

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Brunei cagers tell The Brunei Times why they quit the Barracudas.

THEY did it out of love.

The Brunei players on the Barracudas' roster yesterday confirmed that they have quit the team, but said they did it because they loved the team.

But Esmond Tan, Benjamin Lim, Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili and Lim Aik Hock, who were with the team from the start of the Asean Basketball League in 2009, yesterday said they decided to quit the team so that the Barracudas could improve.

"We didn't walk out on the team and we informed the manager before we stopped training. It isn't about not getting enough playing time. There are only four more games to go and we have sat out on the bench for most of last season and this season," they said in a statement to The Brunei Times. Read More…

Esmond Tan (L) and Benjamin Lim. Picture: BT photo above: Esmond Tan (L) and Benjamin Lim. Picture: BT

SOURCES close to the Brunei Barracudas yesterday disclosed that all local players on the team's roster have quit the country's first professional basketball team.

The current Barracudas lineup for the sophomore season of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) is only made up of nine players with the duo of American imports Chris Commons and Chris Garnett, the trio of Filipino players Chester Tolomia, Ramsey Williams and Bryan Faundo joined by Bruneians Esmond Tan, Benjamin Lim, Hj Md Badri Hj Suhaili and Lim Aik Hock.

The Barracudas have four more games to play in the regular season of the ABL where they are currently fifth in the six-team table holding a 3-8 win-loss record.

Tan when contacted by The Brunei Times yesterday refused to comment saying that he and the other Bruneian players will issue a statement soon.

The team are coming off a 95-87 defeat at the hands of the KL Dragons on Dec 4.

Sunday's win for the Dragons, who stunned the league leaders the Thailand Slammers 77-57 at home, means that the Barracudas would have to win all their remaining matches for a chance of making the playoffs.

The match, contested at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat, sparked a duel of backcourt players with Jong How Kiat leading the charge for Haska with 21 points. Fellow guard Chua Shi Xuan contributed 18 points while big men Nicholas Wijayakusuma Horas and Leong Ming Xing added 12 and 16 respectively.

Auto Experts guard Jonathan Lee scored a game high 27 points while fellow running-mate Brandon James Numbiar wreaked havoc from the three point territory to pour in 23 points, all in the first half, to the losing cause.

A fatigued Brunei side were humbled 77-55 by Vietnam in the battle for seventh place on Monday.

The team was hoping to improve on their fifth place finish two years ago whereby the Sultanate managed to capture three wins.

But unlike two years ago when the team had four Filipinos, only Don Mordeno and Marjomar Aying were in the line-up after Elvin Requintin and Geve Leones begged off due to personal reasons.

This year, the team only managed one win - against Vietnam 87-83 in the group stages on Saturday.

Despite the setback, national basketball coach Kevin Reece remains positive on the outlook of Brunei basketball.

"Overall it was a great experience especially for the younger ones on the squad. They played well as most of them have never played in conditions whereby their opponents were so tall," said Reece, during an interview with The Brunei Times, yesterday. Read More…
