Prior to their opening match, Porlahe had mentioned that his team had trouble gelling due to the seven stars rule but are getting better with more games under their belt.

When asked on what he thinks about being labelled as the favourites, the Filipino coach replied: "We have to take it one game at a time but I'm confident that we can make it into the final." Read More…

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

POOR execution down the stretch and foul trouble were the reasons why the Brunei Barracudas lost 66-77 to the Thailand Tigers last Sunday in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) at the Nimibutr National Stadium in Bangkok.

"We just didn't execute in the end game. We had managed to get a lead as large as 14 points in the third but suddenly the momentum changed and they came back," said coach Bong Ramos in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"We lost out on the field goal percentage. Despite shooting poorly we still managed to take the lead but it was down to the final minutes of the game that let us down," added Ramos.

Brunei's first professional basketball team were shooting a miserable 31 per cent from the field making 28 out of 91 attempts whereby, in contrast, the Tigers shot 52 per cent making 31 out of 60 attempts.

The Barracudas head coach also pointed out that they were equal on the stats sheet but lost out to early foul trouble.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Reggie Larry (24) REGGIE LARRY hopes to come up with another sterling performance and help the Brunei Barracudas win their first back-to-back wins in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) today against Thailand Tigers at the Nimibutr National Stadium in Bangkok.

"I believe that we have the confidence to beat them as we had some really good practices earlier in the week in preparation for them (Tigers). But we know that it's not going to be easy. They were beating us the whole game (last Saturday) so we have to be prepared," said Larry in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"We need this win to give us more confidence and a little more comfort before we head into the two week break," added the former Boise State player.

However, the 6ft 6in forward, won't be doing it alone but will be counting on his teammates to step it up a notch to lead the team for victory.

"I want to get my teammates involved in the game even more.

"We need the team to be confident to shoot the ball and be in the open spots when I drive because I think that they will try to clot the middle up and maybe double team a little bit," said Larry.

"But if they do double me then that means Mike (Pilgrim) is going to have an even bigger game than last week," added the 23-year-old American.

Pilgrim had an impressive 16-point performance together with 15 rebounds to his name in his first game starting at the centre position after the departure of seven-footer Lonnie Jones. Read More…

Aziz Latif seek 3rd win

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Thursday, November 19, 2009

AZIZ LATIF & CO are aiming for their third win of the LBC Cup when they take to the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat against Liga Bumiputera tonight.

Facing off against the newly-formed all-Malay team which has created waves in the local basketball community, Aziz Latif's head coach knows that his team has their work cut out for them in their Group B regular seven stars category game which tips off at 8:30.

"We have more experienced players than Liga Bumiputera but we know we will have to tighten our defence if we want to win," said Angelito Calina, who played for the University of the East Red Warriors in the Philippines in the 1990s.

"The focus is more on set plays," he added.

Calina said he would be counting on 6ft centre Chris David, 5ft 10 forward Alex Caling, 5ft 9 shooting guard Chris Mariano and 5ft 8 point guard Ron Ang to carry the team to victory.

"It is an important game for us and our opponents are new to the league but they have pride," added the coach, referring to Liga Bumiputera's run in September's 3rd Manjaro Cup with Aewon and Western Union tournament.

Liga Bumiputera went undefeated in the tournament, making their debut in a local basketball competition where they were the guest team in the 38-years-old and above category.

Barracudas ready for Tigers

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

AFTER coming off a 91-86 home victory over the Thailand Tigers, the Barracudas are eyeing their first back-to-back win of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) season when they visit the Tigers at the Nimibutr National Stadium in Bangkok on Sunday.

Their win last Saturday, their first at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas, ended a three-game slump after acquiring American import, Reggie Larry in replacement of his compatriot, seven-footer Lonnie Jones.

"He's (Larry) the import that we're looking for," said Barracudas head coach Bong Ramos after Larry led the team with 32 points and six assists.

"We got Lonnie (Jones) in the first place because of his height. We needed him for rebounding but he was only producing five to six rebounds a game."

"Lonnie is a good player but we found someone better, who is more suited to the team with energy and is a scorer. This in turn, puts Mike (Pilgrim) in his place and he showed what he could do as he produced 16 points and 15 rebounds in the last game," continued Ramos.

Ramos commented that they have always had Larry in their sights over the past three months even before the league started. Read More…

Menglait All-Star came out sluggish in the second period and allowed Morley Movers to extend their lead at 32-21 midway through the stanza.

Beaver late show downs ALC

Sunday, November 15, 2009

BEAVER ENGINEERING left it till late to defeat Aziz Latif and Company (ALC) 80-72 last night in Group B of the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Vincent Superio had a game-high 38 points for Beaver Engineering and Ace Castro chipped in 15 points.

On the other hand, Alex Caling led ALC with 14 points while Ron Ang and Ralph Borja each contributed 11 points to a losing cause.

ALC started out better of the two teams running the floor well to put points on the board through fastbreaks.

This helped them to open up a 21-13 lead heading into the second quarter.

Beaver Engineering were banking on Superio as he lifted the team on offence, penetrating to the basket.

ALC were controlling the boards with their height advantage, but their opponents had reduced the deficit to within 33-32 going into halftime.

Beaver Engineering picked up their defence in the third quarter to contain ALC's fastbreaks, but they remained down at 36-37 heading into the final stanza.

ALC went cold from the field and collapsed in the final period as they couldn't find any rhythm on offence.

Beaver Engineering, meanwhile, continued to execute well on offence and grabbed the lead midway through the period.

They never looked back to head for their fourth straight victory. Read More...

Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Saturday, November 14, 2009

photo: BT/Yee Chun Leong REGGIE LARRY the Barracudas new import hopes he can help the Brunei team stop the rot when they take on the Thailand Tigers in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas tonight.

"I'm all ready and excited for the game. It's good that there is no jetlag and that I'm in good shape. I'm just anxious to see what there is on game day," said Larry in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"I was told that the crowd is great. I'm looking forward to it (his first game with the Barracudas) and I am very excited to play," added Larry.

However, having only arrived in the Sultanate on Wednesday evening, the 23-year-old American doesn't quite know what to expect from the ABL.

"I don't know what to expect. I'll just do what the coach wants me to do. I'm going to do whatever it takes to grab the first home win for the team," said the former Boise State Broncos player. Read More…

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Saturday, November 14, 2009

BEAVER ENGINEERING head into their crucial encounter against Aziz Latif and Company (ALC) in Group B of the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat tonight in confident mood.
Beaver Engineering are coming off three consecutive victories to top their group but ALC are no pushovers as they are on a roll as well with two wins.

"Tomorrow (Saturday) is a very important game for us. If we win then we'll definitely have a good chance to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament," said Tony De Vera, the head coach of Beaver Engineering, when contacted yesterday.

"The morale is there and we are hoping to keep our winning streak intact by grabbing another victory," added the Filipino.

However, De Vera is worried as he will be without two of his key players for the crucial encounter.

"I'm quite worried that (Junard) Presado might not be available due to work commitments while Renato Galvez is out with an injury. I don't think he'll be able to play for the match." Read More…

Warriors maul El Tigre Marshalls

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday, November 13, 2009

WARRIORS notched up the first win of their LBC Cup campaign with a 115-84 mauling of El Tigre Marshalls last night in Group A of the regular seven stars category at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Jeff Paraiso had a game-high 23 points to lead Warriors and Allan Caringal poured in 20 points.

On the other hand, Joemel Xlo led El Tigre Marshalls with 19 points and Romel Valmores chipped in 17 points to a losing cause.

It was full court pressure defence in the third quarter that saw the Warriors outscore their opponents 26-4 to open up an unassailable 77-58 lead that led to the blowout victory.

"Actually our opponents didn't have enough players and I think that they lost their motivation midway through the game. We saw their lack of bench and gained confidence as we adjusted our defence which helped us win the game," said Mike Juan, the playing coach of the Warriors.

Both teams started well as Warriors were attacking the low post by penetrating to the hoop.

El Tigre Marshalls, meanwhile, were relying on their fastbreaks and perimeter shooting to keep them in the game. But they were still down 19-24 going into the second quarter.

El Tigre Marshalls came out storming in the second period and quickly established a 40-32 lead midway through the period.

Warriors couldn't find any rhythm on offence and were making unforced turnovers.

However, the tides turned in the final minutes of the quarter as the Warriors began to put up a water tight defence closing the quarter with a 14-4 run that saw them sit on top 54-51 heading into halftime.
"I was quite disappointed with our first half but it was good that the players decided to step up in the second half to win the game," said Juan.

In the day's earlier match, guest team AKK Design picked up their third straight victory in the 45 years old and above category with an 80-49 demolition of Nueva Ecija Patriot. Abellsto San Antonio led AKK Design with 23 points while Manolito Macale topscored for Nueva Ecija Patriot with 16.

New Barracudas import arrives.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

BRUNEI BARRACUDAS will parade a new import when they meet Thailand Tigers on Saturday at the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex in Berakas.

Reggie Larry, who will replace the seven-footer Lonnie Jones, arrived last night and was met by head coach Bong Ramos.

According to the rules of the Asean Basketball League (ABL), each team is only entitled to two international imports. "I had been resting and nursing an injury prior to coming here. I was just waiting for something to happen and the Barracudas offered me to come and I accepted gladly," said Larry in an interview with The Brunei Times .

"I've been to Asia before and I enjoyed it. So I thought why not come back again to try it out," added Larry.

Larry played for the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) before a finger injury early this year kept him out of the game.

"I just want to play the best that I can. I need to give the coach a good impression of what I can do despite knowing that the season has started. I'm going to get a good vibe going here. I'll try to fit in the team as I know I'm a player who likes to fight and hustle to score and rebound," said Larry, who is a power forward but also plays small forward.

"I can shoot and also put the ball on the floor as I can rebound and move faster than the biggers players," said the 23-year-old who was born in Newark, New Jersey. He studied at the Barringer High School and played for the College of Southern Idaho from 2005-2006. Read More...

Brunei Barracudas hoping to end slump.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
A BAD day was exactly how Barracudas head coach Bong Ramos described their disastrous game in Jakarta which was a 97-62 thrashing to Satria Muda BritAma last Sunday in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) at the BritAma Arena.

"We started flat in that game and we eventually gave up. We came out ready to play after preparing hard in training but it was just that the players weren't in good shape for that day (Sunday)," said Ramos in a telephone interview with The Brunei Times.

"It was just a bad day for all of us. It was just like them (Satria Muda) when they played against the Singapore Slingers where they lost badly," added the Filipino mentor in reference to Satria Muda's 96-72 thrashing at the hands of the Slingers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Nov 1.

The Barracudas had come up short of the Slingers in their home game with a 80-82 defeat on Oct 24.

"Basketball is an exciting game and anything can happen because the ball is round. We just can't see how strong a team is when the other team have a bad day," said the 40-year-old Ramos.

At the start of the season, Ramos had put Satria Muda amongst the top three teams to beat in the league together with the Slingers and Philippine Patriots and rightfully believes that they are championship contenders.

Satria Muda opened up a 25-11 lead in the first quarter heading into the second quarter and never looked back extending their lead to as much as 30 points as they went for the largest winning margin of the inaugural league. Read More...

Warriors seek first win vs El Tigre

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

THE Warriors are all hyped up and ready to notch their first win in Group A of the regular seven stars category of the LBC Cup when they take on El Tigre Marshalls tomorrow at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

"The team is doing fine and we have been undergoing some practice sessions and are hoping to grab our first win of the tournament," said Michael Juan, playing coach of Warriors.

"I see that the team is getting to know each other's role now and we'll be banking on our defence to help lift us in Thursday's game," added Juan.

The Warriors have been handed the toughest task in the group thus far going up against two of the tournament favourites, ABMS and Palm Cafe, in their first two games. ABMS eventually thrashed them 103-74 and Palm Cafe left it late in their match to come up on top 111-96.

"In our previous two matches we had to go up against the favourites. It is quite unlucky that we have been placed in the difficult group.

"The thing is that we haven't gelled together properly yet prior to that and we lost some key players in the final moments of the match against Palm Cafe," said Juan.

When asked on what he thought of their opponents for Thursday's match, Juan replied: "They are going to be a tough team to beat as they are a good team. We saw that from their previous games they are well organised and I believe that their threats would be their defence and their fastbreaks which is key." Read More...
