00152 SCIENCE COLLEGE (MSPSBS) were the first team to secure passage into the semi-finals of the 2009 MD Cup, led by their senior players Khoo Chin Kai and Han Ming Kwang who each contributed 20 points, after easily beating Maktab Duli (MD) 'B' 72-49 at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat yesterday.

Both teams started brightly but MSPSBS were the more tenacious of the two and managed to open up a 17 points lead halfway through the opening half before MD 'B' mounted a small comeback to reduce that deficit and end the period down 10 points at 32-22.

MSPSBS continued to push in the second half and tried to extend their lead but both teams were equal at their offensive ends exchanging baskets to bring the scores to 47-38 halfway through the period.

MSPSBS were not ready to let go of their lead as they did in the previous game. Everyone on the team looked hungry and were determined to advance to the next round.

MD 'B' couldn't get anything going for the final 10 minutes of the period as they struggled to even get back on defence as their opponents began to run riot in the game.

MD 'B' began to look tired, committing unforced turnovers and couldn't execute anything on offence allowing their opponents to exploit those weaknesses to score on fastbreaks and run away with victory.

MD 'B' were led by Wong Ha Shiong with 14 points and Denis Chee with 13 points.

"Today's (Friday's) game was great! Everyone on the team stepped up their game and played with high energy. It's good that everyone played well today," said MSPSBS captain Khoo.

MSPSBS, however, will have to wait to know their opponents either Laksamana College of Business (LCB) or Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) from Group A.

MD 'A' still stand a chance to advance but it would take them a miracle after their 84-42 demolition by LCB the day before.

"We have to improve on our defence especially inside the paint because the teams we will face next have the size advantage," said Khoo when asked about their next opponents. Read More...
