STRONG EAGLES picked up their second consecutive victory with a 61-48 triumph over Liga Bumiputera in Group A of the Open Category of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Former Barracudas, Xavier Fong, topscored for Strong Eagles by pouring in 16 points while Goh Boon Tiong and Lim Kok Shien added 12 and 11 respectively in the victory.

Hj Md Rahmat Hj Suhaili scored the game-high of 21 points to pace Liga Bumiputera to the losing cause.

Liga Bumiputera, comprising a complete roster of Malay cagers, got off to a bright start to boast a 6-0 lead.

The lead was, however, short-lived as Strong Eagles responded by switching gears to go on the break to score.

Both sides were pushing the ball quickly on offence and it was Fong who hit a layup to give Strong Eagles their first lead of the game at 14-13 midway through the first half. Read More…

National cagers ready for Hong Kong challenge

THE Brunei national team are hoping to bounce back from their opening game loss when they face off against Hong Kong today in Group B of the Third China-Asean Men's Basketball Invitational tournament at Pingguo County, Guangxi, China.

The national cagers suffered a 100-58 setback against hosts Guangxi in their opener on Tuesday night but Kevin Reece, the national basketball coach, is positive that the team are capable of capping a win against the Hong Kong side.

"Everyone on the China team was taller than us. Stats-wise we only had 10 turnovers and shot 80 per cent from the free throw line but we were outrebounded 51-32," said Reece, during an interview with The Brunei Times, yesterday.

"I believe that we played good defence on them (Guangxi) but they were just too tall. It was a great experience for our players though," added the LA Lakers fan. Read More…

Hankook Komala roll over TK

HANKOOK KOMALA proved that experience triumphs over youth after they cruised to a 83-64 victory over TK Tea House in Group B of the Open Category of the Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Alumni Association 18th Anniversary Basketball tournament yesterday at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

With an evenly distributed offensive effort, four players hit double figures for Hankook Komala.

Liew Kok Fui led the way with a game-high of 19 points and Mark See added 17 for Hankook Komala.

Kevin Tay contributed 15 points and Lee Huat Beng chipped in an additional 12 points in the victory.

On the other hand, points were also evenly distributed between the TK Tea House players. Dalbert Law hit a team-high of 14 points while Eric Tan and Teo Lian Boon scored 13 points each. Lim Jin Yee chipped in a 12-point effort to the losing cause. Read More…

THE national basketball team got off to a losing start after they suffered a 100-58 setback against hosts Guangxi last night in Group B opener of the Third China-Asean Men's Basketball Invitational tournament at Pingguo County, Guangxi, China.

Ben Sim was the only national cager that got into double figures with 20 points, adding five rebounds and four assists to his name. Don Mordeno contributed eight points, five rebounds and three assists for the Brunei team in a losing effort. On the other hand, Lu Daming had a double-double for Guangxi with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Yuan Lin contributed 19 points while Chen Chao and Shengheng added 17 and 14 points respectively in the victory.

Guangxi, who were runners-up in the tournament last year and were third in China's National Basketball League, got off to a strong start and opened up a 23-13 lead heading into the second quarter. Read More…
