Don Sheppard to leave Darwin Basketball Association

DBA's development manager Don Sheppard has decided to quit for family matters.

Aside from being the development manager of DBA, Sheppard was also the head coach for Australia's Darwin Airport Resort All-Stars for the annual Brunei Cup tournament.

Champs Studio Jade inflate Trane Air

TWO-TIME defending champions Studio Jade got their hopes for a grand slam off to a perfect start last night, beating Trane Air 71-58 in the first match of the 2009 Filipino Amateur Basketball Tournament First Conference Queenielin Cup at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) basketball court in Batu Bersurat.

For the next 40 days or so, 25 teams divided into four groups will vie for honours in the tournament organised by the Filipino Association Brunei (FAB).

Studio Jade's convincing victory last night might not come as a surprise to many, and by resting star player Geve Leones for most of the match, coach Albert Cenabre sent out a message to the rest of their opponents they are not firing on full cylinders yet.

"It was always my plan to rest him (Leones) since we knew we had enough quality to beat our rivals," said Cenabre after the match.

"Our strategy was to work on our set pieces and concentrate on a trapping defence and I think we did well."

Dominating their opponents under the paint, Studio Jade's good rebounding saw them score several second-chance points while severely limit that of their opponents.

However, Trane Air did enjoy more trips to the free-throw line as a result of the hard-fought battle under the glass.

The focal point of his team's attack in the first quarter, Leones's re-appearance in the game a few minutes into the second quarter after Trane Air had started to pull some stops and take the lead had an immediate impact.

Coming up with four steals in quick succession, of which three turned into transition points after he went coast to coast, Leones turned the game around and restored his team's lead in the space of minutes.

Carrying a comfortable lead for most of the second half, Studio Jade were technically and tactically the better side last night and had no problems preventing Trane Air from mounting a comeback. Courtesy of The Brunei Times
