Ch'ng excited to be a Rebel

NEW Darwin basketball recruit Marcus Ch'ng is a Rebel with a cause.
PETER TIFFEN
February 3rd, 2009

"I want to help Rebels win the championship," Ch'ng said.

The club has not tasted success in the DBA men's league since the wet season of 1984 - the year of Ch'ng's first birthday.

And they are also coming off a truly dry season - 14 matches without a win.

But the classy guard has signed on from QABL club Ipswich with high hopes.

"I've been to one practice session. There are a lot of new faces. We just need time to jell and build chemistry and I'm sure we will be there at the business end of the season."

Ch'ng has captained the Darwin Airport Resort All Stars in its past three Brunei Cup campaigns.

And Ch'ng has been drafted into the Northern Territory squad for the Arafura Games in May.

He said the opportunities opening up in Darwin basketball played a big part in his decision to move to the Territory.

"I know the DBA has a busy schedule with the Arafura Games, which is an international tournament, and with the Singapore Slingers series and other tournaments in Asia like the Brunei Cup," Ch'ng said.

"I hope to definitely further my game and get better as a basketball player here.

"I've been to Darwin for training camps and matches and I have always really enjoyed it.

"I am just trying to acclimatise to this weather at the moment. Hopefully it gets a bit cooler.

"I am originally from North Queensland but the weather is totally different with the humidity.''

Ch'ng's Rebels start their Challenge Season campaign against Lightning at Darwin Basketball Stadium Tuesday 3 February.
