EASYWAY have been favourites to win the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship (BYBC) Under-21 tournament and they did just that last Sunday when they conquered an all-Seria team, Goldunited Hardware, 65-61, to lift the championship trophy before a huge crowd at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria.

With a formidable lineup bannered by 2009 national players Choo Yung Jian and Soon Kian Leong and 2008 national team member Elwin Chong, Easyway lived up to their billing.

But despite the solid lineup, the team had to fight hard to win every game. Their only defeat was against basement dwellers, Spade, 76-75 on September 8.

"My players are determined to win. As tournament favourites, we cannot be complacent. We have to work hard every game and do our best to win," said Lowey Dee Palma, Easyway head coach.

"This tournament is a good venue for young players to develop their skills. I saw a lot of good players in this tournament. Who knows, we may find some future national players among the participants here," added Palma. Read More…

EASYWAY moved one step closer to reaching the final of the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship (BYBC) Under-21 tournament when they cruised to a 76-56 victory over Marilyn at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria last night to finish first after the group stages.

It was a game to be forgotten by Marilyn, who let Easyway score at will to take the lead from start to finish.

"I think we played better tonight (Friday night) compared to our previous games as we have a full line-up today," said Choo Yung Jian, the shooting guard of Easyway, in a telephone interview after the match last night.

"But the key to our victory is our teamwork, which I think has improved after putting in more games together," added the national cager.

Prior to the tournament, Easyway never trained as a team as they found it difficult to get their players together for training. Read More...

SPADE notched up their first win in the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship Under-21 basketball tournament defeating Easyway 76-75 at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria last night.

Victory was much sweeter for Spade as Easyway were in control for much of the game and led 40-27 at halftime.

According to point guard of Spade, Choo Yung Kang, his teammate, Dominic Tang, caught fire in the third quarter that helped them notch up the victory. "He was on fire as he shot about six three-pointers in a row that helped us grab the lead," said Choo. "Our performance was not that good, especially in the first quarter but it was our will to push as a team in the second half that helped us," added Choo.

However, the win doesn't guarantee Spade a passage into the semi-finals. "We have already lost two of our games but this is not the end yet as we still have some more games to play. Hopefully we can win and make it," added Choo. Read More...

WONG HA SHIONG scored the game-winning free throw for Maya Silk Emporium to land his team a 63-62 win over Spade in the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship (BYBC) Under-21 tournament at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria last night.

"I was on my way for a fastbreak but the opponents caused a technical foul on me. I managed to only sink one of the technical free throws. Keeping possession with nine seconds left on the clock, we just held on to the ball to score the victory," said Wong when contacted yesterday.

Maya Silk Emporium, who lost their opening game to Easyway on Thursday by just one point at 63-62, were down 31-34 at halftime.

The victory tasted even sweeter as they only had six players for the game.

"It was very difficult for us as some of our players had to compete in the tournament in Tutong (the GHK Trophy) tonight (Friday)," added Wong. Read More...

POINT-GUARD Elwin Chong scored the game-winning basket for Easyway to earn them a 61-59 victory against Maya Silk Emporium on the first day of the Brunei Youth Basketball Championship (BYBC) Under-21 tournament last night.

Held at the Kg Baru basketball court in Seria, the win for Easyway was even sweeter since they were trailing 33-31 at the end of the first half.

According to national cager Choo Yong Jian, who is also playing for Easyway, the team are made up of players from the Belait and Bandar districts which made it hard for them to train together.

"This was the first time we had played together actually," said Choo.

"We just wanted to win badly and that's why we got the result.

"Our coach changed tactics in the final few minutes to concentrate more on offence and it paid off when Elwin scored the winning basket," added the shooting guard. Read More…
