THE Barracudas suffered a 89-95 setback to the Singapore Slingers in their Asean Basketball League (ABL) match last night at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Despite the loss, which snapped their four game winning streak at home, the Barracudas are still in contention for the fourth spot in making the playoffs in the inaugural league.

The Barracudas and the KL Dragons have identical 6-8 win-loss records for 20 points.

"We're not out yet and we still have another chance against the Patriots on Sunday. We're not relying on other teams to help us get into the playoffs but we'll remain focus and push all the way and hope that we can conjure up a victory," said Bong Ramos, the Barracudas head coach, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.

Leo Avenido had a game-high 30 points for the Barracudas including going 13 for 13 from the free throw line. Reggie Larry added 23 points, Francis 'Kiko' Adriano scored 16 points and Mike Pilgrim chipped in 12 points.

The Slingers had five players in double figures with American import, Michael LeBlanc, leading the way with 26 points while compatriot Kyle Jeffers poured in 19 points. Al Vergara contributed 15 points while local boys Hong Wei Jian and Desmond Oh contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Slingers waxed hot in the first quarter, posting a 27-16 lead before returning to their dugout with a commanding 49-35 advantage.

The Slingers went on a shooting spree in the second half and extended their lead to 20 points before the Barracudas rallied to cut the deficit to 72-83 going into the final four minutes of the game. Read More...
