SOON LEE-Easyway shrugged off their opening day loss to rack up their first win of the 2010 Sultan's Cup last night.

Beating Team Wayne 96-53, the side filled with national team players controlled the game from start to finish at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

The largest win of the tournament so far, the convincing victory helped cast aside memories of their 89-82 defeat to Shark Team in the opener last Saturday.

"We had to shake off our loss with not just a win but a good win," said national coach Kevin Reece.

"We had to improve on some things that ... helped us lose our first game. Basically, we had to get back to basics. We had to do the things we're supposed to do on the basketball court.

"The team needs to be consistent in every game, and if we do that, whether we win or lose I can't complain," added the Los Angeles native.

He certainly wasn't complaining with their start to the game.

The team was leading 21-10 at the end of the opening quarter and had set the game's tempo with their run-and-gun style of play.

Though they rested regulars Yap Chun Ping and Benjamin Sim, Soon Lee-Easyway still managed to fire on all cylinders throughout the 40 minutes.

Lim Liang Wei had a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds for Soon Lee-Easyway, followed by Choo Yung Jian with 16 points, five assists and five steals. Tan Ye Wei contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

Arjay Buena Ventura top scored for Team Wayne with 17 and was the only player from his team in double digits. Koh Wee Chian and Liew Kok Fui added eight and six points respectively.

Team Wayne was finding it hard to set their plays in the face of some relentless full-court pressure and it showed in their poor passing game.

Turnovers and steals led to the national players eventually opening up a 20-point gap three minutes before the break when Poh Yung Hui nailed a free-throw to make it 35-15, and slowly but surely, Soon Lee-Easyway was building on their lead. Read More…
